This study focuses on the Daisenzui (garden pond) in the Koishikawa Korakuen Garden and examines how it was used in the past. The garden at the Koishikawa residence of the Mito clan began to be created during
the reign of Yorifusa Tokugawa (1603-1661) , the first lord of the domain, and was completed by Mitsukuni (1628-1701), the second. The Daisenzui was altered several times, including during the visit of Keishoin in 1702 during the reign of Tsunayoshi, the third lord of the Mito domain, and after the great earthquake of the following year. The origin of the Suifu-ryu style of swimming was the swimming at the Mito domain residence in Edo, and there is a record that Tsunayoshi observed the water skills of the domain's samurai at the residence of the Koishikawa.
Based on historical documents related to the Koishikawa Korakuen Daisenzui, water depth, pondside structure, etc. , this study examines whether the water training of clan members was performed, and considers the possibility that water training was performed in the late Edo period during the reign of Nariaki Tokugawa, the 9th lord of the Mito Tokugawa family, when the structural form was almost identical to that of the current Daisenzui. -

Japanese gardens outside Japan have been created as a means of international exchange, and 639 such gardens have been identified worldwide. In this study, we surveyed 35 Japanese gardens in Australia, of which 71.4% are sister city Japanese gardens, to obtain detailed data and clarify their diversity. We established a new classification system for Japanese gardens in Australia based on the nature of Japan’s involvement in their creation: 1) involvement of the Japanese government, companies, or organizations (7 gardens); 2) strong involvement of Japanese sister cities (6 gardens); 3) collaboration between Japanese and Australian citizens of sister cities (6 gardens); 4) gardens created with only gifts or advice from Japan (13 gardens); and 5) gardens with no exchange or involvement from Japan (3 gardens). We also analyzed changes in Japan’s international exchange practices over the decades, starting from the 1960s, and compared these to Japan’s involvement in the construction of Japanese gardens in Australia. This study reveals that the diverse types of Japanese gardens in Australia were influenced not only by economic conditions but also by the evolving nature of Japan’s international exchange policies and its varying levels of involvement.

This report discusses the results of a survey on homecoming cherry blossoms in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, conducted by the nonprofit organization Arakawa Gakkai since from 2021 to 2024 (the survey is still ongoing). The homecoming cherry blossom refers to cherry trees that originated on the banks of the Arakawa River in Adachi-Ward and were migrated to the United States. Their descendants were then brought back from the United States and planted in Japan. Chapter 1 provides a brief description of homecoming cherry blossoms and the background of our survey. Chapter 2 describes how cherry trees planted on the banks of the Arakawa River were transferred to the United States and brought back to Adachi Ward. Chapter 3 describes the current status of homecoming cherry blossoms planted in all elementary and junior high schools in Adachi Ward, Japan—specifically, the number of blossoms planted there. Chapter 4 describes the results of interviews with school officials and teachers regarding the use of homecoming cherry blossoms. The findings described in this report are useful for future academic research, as the blossoms are a unique local resource in Adachi Ward and should be preserved for future generations.
