<p>Since 2000, wheat yield per 10 a in Northern Kyushu was about 500 kg in 2007–2008, less than 300 kg in 2010–2011, and about 500 kg again in 2021–2022. Therefore, the effect of climatic conditions on wheat yield in Northern Kyushu was analyzed in detail on a daily basis for 23 years from 2000 to 2022. Three significant weather conditions, namely precipitation from December 10 to 21 and April 12 to 23, and sunshine duration from February 17 to March 1, were adopted as explanatory variables at the 5% level. The standard partial regression coefficients were –0.357 for precipitation from December 10 to 21, –0.433 for precipitation from April 12 to 23, and 0.407 for sunshine hours from February 17 to March 1, with a degree of freedom adjusted multiple correlation coefficient of 0.826 and coefficient of determination of 0.682. Precipitation from December 10–21 decreased the number of ears and grains per square meter, and precipitation from April 12–23 decreased the thousand-grain weight and limited sink size, respectively. Sunshine hours from February 17 to March 1 appeared to be related to sink and source size determination because this is the jointing stage when internode elongation is most active. Avoiding sink size limitation due to precipitation at two specific times of the year, December and April, is important to achieve stable and high yields in wheat in northern Kyushu.</p>

The wine grapes of Tokachi wine are produced at Ikeda in eastern Hokkaido, where the daily minimum air temperature drops below -20℃ during winter. In this study, we investigated the impact of the previous and current year’s climate conditions (air temperature, precipitations, and sunshine hours) on the fruit quality (Brix, acidity), yield of grapes and Tokachi wine’s vintage evaluation using three varieties ‘Kiyomi’, ‘Kiyomai’, and ‘Yamasachi’ from 1995 to 2016. ‘Kiyomi’ is a clonal selection of the French-derived ‘Seibel 13053’, while ‘Kiyomai’ and ‘Yamasachi’ are cold hardy hybrids derived from crosses of ‘Kiyomi’ and <I>Vitis amurensis</I>. The mean temperature from April to September and rainfall from August to September showed significant positive and negative correlations with the vintage evaluation in Ikeda, respectively, as well as in Bordeaux, France. Brix value of “Kiyomi” was positively correlated with sunshine hours in August and September of the growing year, while its acidity was negatively correlated with the average daily maximum temperature of June and average high temperature of September of the growing year. On the other hand, the Brix value and acidity of ‘Kiyomai’ and ‘Yamasachi’ were strongly influenced by the climatic conditions of the previous year as well as the growing year. Acidity of ‘Kiyomai’ was negatively correlated with the average temperature in June and November of the previous year, while Brix value of ‘Yamasachi’ was positively correlated with the sunshine hours in July of the previous year. In cold regions such as Ikeda, recent global warming has been considered to have a positive effect on agricultural production. However, this study shows that not all conditions associated with warming are positive for Ikeda’s grapes and Tokachi wine.

<p>The relationship between soft wheat flour characteristics and sugar snap cookie (SSC) quality was analyzed using SSC diameter (SSCD) as an indicator of SSC quality. Various flour streams (flours), obtained by milling four kinds of soft wheat (Western White and three Japanese domestic wheats) with different characteristics, were used. The results showed that the soft wheat flour characteristics that greatly affected SSCD were damaged starch (DSC), amylose (AC) and protein contents (PC). SSCD showed a significantly higher correlation with DSC than AC and PC; the correlation coefficients were −0.938, 0.644 and −0.552, respectively. Based on the results, stepwise multiple regression analyses were performed, and a multiple regression model with DSC, AC and PC as explanatory variables was obtained. The model can be used to accurately estimate SSCD (corrected R2 = 0.915, standard error of residual = 2.22 (mm)). This model was effective as a means to estimate the SSC quality of various weak flours easily and accurately.</p>
