Objective: To evaluate free-living gait characteristics in comparison with in-laboratory walking among Japanese university students.
Methods: Gait characteristics (walking speed, step length, and cadence) were measured in a laboratory setting and a free-living situation. In both settings, the gait characteristics were assessed using motion sensors attached to both ankles. In the laboratory setting, subjects walked on a circular course for 5 minutes while maintaining their natural walking speed, which was assessed in 5-m walking tests. In a free-living situation, subjects were asked to wear the devices for 1 week. Frequencies of values higher than, the same as, and lower than the data measured in the laboratory were calculated for the free-living data. The effect of footwear type was also examined in a free-living situation.
Results: Eight healthy university students (age: 22.1 ± 0.4 years, six female subjects) completed the study. During the free-living period, the frequencies of slower walking speed, shorter step length, and slower cadence compared with the in-laboratory period were 79.4 ± 14.6%, 69.8 ± 25.3%, and 73.4 ± 15.6%, respectively. Walking speed, step length, and cadence were significantly lower when subjects wore slippers compared with other footwears.
Conclusion: Healthy Japanese university students’ walking speed, step length, and cadence during free-living were lower compared with the in-laboratory setting. This suggests that the evaluation of walking in an in-laboratory setting may not reflect free-living walking among university students.DOI: 10.24804/ree.2309

Objectives This study examined the effects of checking the “Tabepo Check Sheet,” which has 10 food groups, on changes in dietary variety among older adults living in Japanese metropolitan areas.

Methods We used baseline and two-year follow-up data from a community-wide intervention to prevent frailty in Ota City, Tokyo. A total of 8,635 non-disabled residents (4,145 men and 4,490 women) aged 65-84 years who responded to the self-administered questionnaire surveys in 2016 and 2018, were included in the two analyses. In 2018, we asked about their experience with the “Tabepo Check Sheet,” which had been distributed among participating communities from three districts in Ota City since July 2017. The “checked group” consists of those who answered “habitually check” or “have checked.” Dietary variety was assessed using the Dietary Variety Score (DVS). We performed propensity score matching with a 1:1 ratio (checked group vs. non-checked group) for the following variables: demographic, socioeconomic, physical, medical, and lifestyle variables, and DVS. After propensity score matching, 876 participants from the checked and non-checked groups were selected. We used a two-way ANOVA to examine the changes in DVS over two years. We also compared the rates of DVS ≤3 and ≥7 points in 2018 using multivariate adjusted logistic regression analysis.

Results In 2018, 11.9% of the respondents had checked the “Tabepo Check Sheet.” The DVS mean±standard deviation in the checked and non-checked groups were 3.9±2.2 points and 3.9±2.3 points in 2016, respectively, and 4.5±2.4 points and 4.1±2.4 points in 2018, respectively. The DVS showed a significant interaction between checking experience and time (p<0.001). The rates of DVS ≤3 points in 2018 were 35.2% and 43.8% among the checked and non-checked groups, respectively. The multivariate adjusted odds ratio (OR) of DVS ≤3 points was 0.68 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.56-0.83) in the checked group versus the non-checked group. The rates of DVS ≥7 points in 2018 were 21.7% and 16.8% among the checked and non-checked groups, respectively. The multivariate adjusted OR (95% CI) of DVS ≥7 points was 1.40 (1.10-1.78) in the checked versus the non-checked group.

Conclusions These results suggest that checking the “Tabepo Check Sheet” may improve dietary variety. However, the effects of dietary variety improvement may be weakened by the incidence of skipped meals, social isolation, frailty, and lack of social participation.

Several studies have reported on constipation in infants, young adults, and the elderly in Japan; however, there are not enough studies on female high school students. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the incidence of constipation and to identify factors associated with constipation in Japanese high school girls. A total of 906 high school girls answered a self-reported questionnaire. They were divided into three groups (non-constipation, semi-constipation, and constipation) based on the number of bowel movements per week, stool shape, incomplete stool sensation, the time required for bowel movement, and laxative use. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed with constipation as the dependent variable and lifestyle-related factors and confounders as independent variables. A total of 54.1% students were assigned to the non-constipation group and 12.9% to the constipation group. The matching rate between the objective defecation status and the subjective defecation status was 53.0%. The multivariable adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) for the constipation group was significant among Profile of Mood States scores (OR: 1.03, 95%CI: 1.00-1.06), eating breakfast (OR: 0.51, 95%CI: 0.30-0.86), chewing (OR: 0.58, 95%CI: 0.34-0.99), and dietary variety scores (OR: 0.90, 95%CI: 0.82-1.00), respectively. Our findings suggest that high school girls need to acquire appropriate knowledge regarding constipation and practice healthy eating habits.
