1. What is Forest Therapy and its Healing Effects?
Forest Therapy (Shinrin-ryoho) is promoting the health of both of forests and human beings! Forests and the trees within them have many healing properties. They promote our health, prevent illness, provide relaxation opportunities, and a rehabilitation environment, can be a treatment place for disabilities, peaceful counseling space, and so forth. When we arrive in the forest, we sometimes pay more attention to oneself and one's life. Walking and exercise in the forest also change our attitudes and perspectives. Trees also have many fascinating aspects for medical, art, and care utilization. However, some forests have been ill, depressed, and having stress like us human beings. So, forest therapy is attempting to heal forest and human beings each other.
2. Examples of Forest Therapy and Forest Amenity Programs
There have been many examples of forest therapy and forest amenity programs in Japan.
First of all, Forest Walking. Walking is the simplest rehabilitation method and whole body exercise. Walking can prevent lifestyle related disease. In addition, individuals walking in the forest enjoy the landscape, fresh air, and natural environment.
Next, relaxation. It is quiet and peaceful in the forest. Relaxation in the forest inspires natural peace in our body and mind. It adjusts our nervous system balance, too.
Third, rehabilitation. For clients after an operation, accident, and preparing to reintegrate with society, forest walking & working is one possible rehabilitation program.
Fourth, treatment and occupational activities in the forest. Carrying logs & branches, cutting trees & weeds, and planting trees are typical examples of occupational therapy.
Fifth, counseling. Counseling in the forest makes clients relax and sensitive. Forest amenities like landscape aesthetics, wind, fragrance, birds singing sometimes give useful hints to solve our problems and provide an ideal setting for traditional counseling approaches.
I hope you will design your own healing or health promoting programs using forests and trees as a setting and as inspiration by my presentation
3. Case Studies of Forest Amenities
There have been already many invaluable case studies utilizing forest amenities in Japan.
By experiencing forest activities for a long term and constantly, some clients with mental, psychological, and physical disabilities showed positive treatment effects! Their communication has been also changed positively. Some experimental studies suggest that forest walking can reduce stress hormone, enhance immune function, and balance nervous system. Recently, some case studies of the patients with Dementia could recover their communication ability, too.
Trees also have great possibilities for healing. For example, some trees provide medicine, herb tea, and fragrance which have certain healing effects.
In addition, trees and forest have been sometimes worshipped as natural god in Japanese culture.
4. Possibilities of Forest and Tree Amenities in Taiwan
What is the special character of people living in Taiwan and how does it differ from Japan and other parts of the world? Many people prefer to enjoy and exercise in the park and nature. There are beautiful green parks, mountains, and forests in the Taiwan. Also, many invaluable kinds of trees have been in natural and tropical forests. Therefore, Taiwan forest environment has a big potential for forest therapy program. Let's reconsider your Taiwan forests in this context and develop these possibilities together! -

Forests, trees, and plants have provided many healing elements for our daily lives from ancient time. In addition, trees and forest have been sometimes worshipped as natural gods in Japanese culture. I introduce some interesting case studies of Forest Therapy (“Shinrin ryoho”) which utilized forest amenities in Japan. These studies have showed that experiencing forest activities (forest walking, occupational activities, rehabilitation, counseling, relaxation) for a certain term and constantly, some clients with mental, psychological, and physical disabilities or illness could ease their disabilities or illness commonly. Their communication has been also changed positively. Other case studies of Dementia patients showed they could recover the communication ability, too. Also other case studies of clients were school teachers or public servants with mild-depression showed their communication and moods were positively changed after forest experiences (counseling, relaxation, and working activities). Many German people have traditionally enjoyed and taken a walk (Wanderung) in the forest. Therefore, this kind of therapy has a big possibility in Germany and German forests, too.

Many attempts have approached to enhance and make clear the counseling effects. However, the attempts utilizing natural environment have been few. This study tried some case studies at urban forest and considered the special counseling effects. Each client regularly walked and stayed in the urban forest (forest park) with a counseling: We call it “Forest Counseling”(Uehara 1996). They watched forest scenery, lay on the forest floor, enjoyed seasonal changing with regular counseling. In addition, they did counseling indoor, too, to compare the difference and the effects. Common changes of the clients were change of air from ordinary environment and lives, getting ideas to solve problems, reconsidering oneself, easing problem condition by Forest Counseling for a few months. These results showed the effects and possibility of counseling utilizing forest environment. Especially, urban forest is easy to access and use by urban citizens. The numbers of people having mental and physical stress in the daily urban life has been increased. Therefore, urban forest has big potential for counseling and psychological green space for urban people. Also, forest showed three roles for the clients and a counselor by case studies: counseling peace place, indicator of clients’ psychological changes, and a being as a counselor.
