Artificial lightweight and porous materials (i.e., architectural greening soils and materials) are often used in the rooftops and wall greening of buildings. It is important for the designers of the system to understand the physical properties of architectural greening soils and materials to save the amount of water and fertilizer used, which directly affects maintenance costs. The aims of this study were to assess the pore size distribution of architectural greening soils and materials for wall greening based on their physical properties. According to water retention measurements, rapid drainage will occur at particular matric potentials for certain architectural greening soils and materials. The pore size distributions of architectural greening soils and materials estimated from water retention curves suggested that the architectural greening soils and materials used in this study can be classified into two groups: (i) materials that include only relatively large pores with diameters from 0.001 to 0.01 cm, (ii) materials also include relatively small pores with diameters from 0.0002 to 0.001 cm. The classification of architectural greening soils and materials by pore size distribution could be affected by their manufacturing processes. The values of saturated hydraulic conductivity of the materials ranged from 10^0 to 10^{-2} cm s^{-1}. Furthermore, hydraulic conductivity tended to increase with total porosity of the architectural greening soils and materials except that whose pores were made by forming.

<p>This study aimed to develop a new method to control <i>Egeria densa</i>, which overgrows in agricultural irrigation canals. We conducted two experiments (one in the laboratory and one in the field), focused on changes in light conditions and the growth of <i>E. densa</i>. In the laboratory experiment, the maximum tensile load of the stems was significantly reduced when the light was shaded to about 20 μmol·m-2·s-1 (1,400 lx). We discovered that shading exerted a significant negative effect on the number of roots. Furthermore, in the field experiment, which was conducted in an actual agricultural canal, the maximum tensile load on stems was reduced in both the 85-90% and 95-98% shade plots. In particular, in the 95-98% shade plot, the tensile load was reduced to about half of that in the control plot (non-shade) during the high grow season from August to October.</p>

<p>Hydroponic farming promotes high-efficiency water, fertilizers, and high productivity under a controlled environment. However, the use of this system needs consistent application of fertilizers, increasing the cost of operations. Molten Slag (MS), a waste from the Municipal Solid Waste Incineration has essential nutrients that can be used as fertilizer. The objective of this study was to clarify the releasing process of nutrients by molten slag to be applied as a substrate in hydroponic system. For this, anion and cation contents of three varieties of Molten Slag (MS1, MS2, MS3) were determined in the laboratory by a shaking method. The nutrient content, P2O5, K2O, MgO and CaO were in MS1, MS3 and MS2. The quantification ion released was performed at 1, 6, 12 and 24 hours. It was observed that MS3 had performed the best condition in the releasing process of K+, Mg+, SO42- and Cl-. Although MS1 had higher nutrient content, MS3 released higher contents of those minerals among the samples. According to the result of this study, it was confirmed that MS3 has a high potential for hydroponic farming.</p>

<p>Earthworms have significant impacts on the physical and chemical properties of soils. It is known that they are remarkably improving soil fertility as well as promoting plant growth because earthworms make castings, which are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients. Additionally, earthworm’s movements effects soil properties by their movements in the soil, notably soil aggregates, nitrogen and phosphorus concentration. Earthworms from Megascolecidae family are a major earthworms found in Japan, but there is lack of knowledge on its effect on soil properties compared to other earthworms. Subsequently, this study discusses the changes in soil aggregates, nitrogen and phosphorus concentration changes with depth due to Megascolicidae movements in the soil. An experiment was conducted using cylindrical columns of 12 cm height divided into 3 layers at 4 cm interval. Additionally, two groups were made, with litter and without litter, which were divided into subgroups with variations in earthworm numbers. The results of aggregates showed the tendency of aggregate formation in both the groups, with high formation rate in litter added group. The results of NO3 and P2O5 content significantly differed among the 3 layers in the treatments. The trend of higher NO3-N and P2O5 concentration was observed in middle layer and lower layer respectively. According to the results obtained, Megascolicidae movements effect the distribution of nutrients in subsurface soils.</p>
