学問は人間がより良く、幸せに生きる力をサポートする人間活動の一つだと思います。その原点は「未知との遭遇」で沸き起こる好奇心ではないでしょうか。そして「未知」について働きかけて試行錯誤し、知識と知恵をまとめ、次代に伝えていく活動だと思います。人間の歴史の中で、学問は社会の公的・私的事業となり、その進め方は多様化しましたが、人が生きていく力をサポートするという点は変わらないと思います。
一方で、役に立つとか立たないとか、すぐお金になるかどうかとは今は距離のあるテーマにも大切な価値があり、そういう研究テーマや研究の進め方、考え方や、理系・文系に関わらない研究分野の多様性を排除しない学問文化が、長期的には人間の生きる力を深く強く支えるとても大事なことだと思っています。
その上で、私は「市民のための市民の科学を」という姿勢を大切にして、地域社会、地域産業と協力した学問研究に誠実に取り組みたいと思っています。なぜなら、グローバルなテーマである持続可能な地球生態系の維持に、地域社会に根ざした研究活動は必要不可欠だと思うからです。

人は何に魅力を感じるのでしょうか。十人十色という言葉があります。何に魅力を感じるのかは人それぞれで、その魅力の価値に高低や優劣はないと私は思います。高低があるように評価したがるのは、人の都合です。私は卒論に選んだテーマがきっかけでゴカイの仲間（多毛類）などの底生無脊椎動物と汽水域に興味を持ちました。結局今でもその魅力にとりつかれて、研究を続けています。どこが魅力だったのかと思い起こすと、多毛類は自分にとって未知の生き物で感心したこと、汽水域はこのフィールドが持つ自然の複雑さと、歴史的な人間との関わりの深さ、そして汽水域に関わる社会と様々な人たちを知って面白いと思ったことです。
みなさん自身が面白いと思うことに、大学で学ぶことが一致したら、それはとても素晴らしいと思います。
