Fruit consumption is highly recommended due to its health benefits. Passiflora species are a good source of vitamins and antioxidant compounds such as carotenoids that are associated with a reduction in cellular oxidative processes, as well as against cardiovascular diseases and cancer development. As a result, purple passion fruit (P. edulis) and yellow passion fruit (P. edulis f. flavicarpa) are economically important crops that are cultivated based on the demand for their flavor and nutraceutical properties. The objective of this study was to determine the components of carotenoids and sugars in the pulp juice of passion fruit. Two Ecuadorian yellow passion fruit strains (‘INIAP 2009’ and ‘POR1’), one Ecuadorian purple passion fruit variety (‘Gulupa’) and two Asian hybrid cultivars (P. edulis × P. edulis f. flavicarpa; ‘Summer Queen’ and ‘Ruby Star’) were used for this research. The results showed that ‘POR1’ had high acidity and contained all carotenoids, but had the lowest amount of vitamin C, whereas ‘INIAP 2009’ had high contents of organic acids, vitamin C and β-cryptoxanthin. ‘Gulupa’ had the lowest acidity, α-carotene and citric acid content, but the highest amount of glucose, fructose, malic acid and vitamin C; this variety also showed high values of β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin. On the other hand, ‘Summer Queen’ had high sucrose, malic acid, α and β-carotene and good amount of vitamin C, while ‘Ruby Star’ had high amounts of α-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin and citric acid, but low vitamin C content. These results can be used for further breeding programs focused on improving passion fruit quality.

High pH is widely acknowledged as a major soil constraint that naturally occurs in arid and semi-arid regions such as Afghanistan, and it is largely attributed to the excess presence of calcium carbonate. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable produced in Kabul Province. However, this crop is mainly grown in soils with alkaline characteristics and low organic matter content. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of pH on plant growth, yield, and fruit quality. The study involved exposing tomato plants to three different pH levels (4.5, 6.5, and 8.5) using a hydroponic system under greenhouse conditions. The highest pH level was set based on a soil analysis conducted in Kabul city, which indicated that most of the province’s soils had a pH around or higher than 8.0. Results showed that high pH decreased tomato plant height, leaf, and root length; while it increased leaf chlorophyll content, leaf electrolyte leakage (EL), root respiration rate, and fruit sucrose content. It was concluded that high pH is a characteristic for most of soils in Kabul province and this parameter influenced the tomato plant growth and fruit quality traits.

Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a tropical fruit that can be consumed fresh or processed. It is a typical respiratory climacteric fruit which is highly perishable because of the loss of water that causes dehydration and thus shrinkage, affecting the fruit appearance; in addition, some quality traits such as fruit weight, firmness and vitamin C content can also be influenced. Therefore, this fruit has a short shelf life. Storage in low temperatures has been assessed to extent the passion fruit shelf life remaining its fruit quality traits; however, information about the application of the hypobaric method in this fruit is null. The objective of this research was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the yellow and purple passion fruit under hypobaric storage conditions in low temperature. Results showed the hypobaric method had a positive effect in decreasing fruit weight loss, declining the loss of firmness, and reducing the degradation of vitamin C during the storage period. It decreased the evolution of ethylene which is positive to delay fruit senescence, and the production of CO2. Finally, it was the only method which avoids the shrinkage completely in the purple passion fruits (‘Gulupa’, ‘Summer Queen’, and ‘Ruby Star’) and showed minor shrinkage in ‘POR1’ (yellow passion fruit). This method is considered as a promising technique to improve fruit storage.

Drought stress is a major production constraint for fruits and vegetable crops not only in arid and semi-arid regions but also all over the arable lands. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of seed priming on the total germination percentage and physiological responses of hot pepper under drought stress. Polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) was used as a priming agent with 5 concentrations (-0, -0.4, -0.8, -1.2 and -1.6 MPa). The seeds were half soaked in each concentration solution for 48 hours at 25°C, while -0 MPa treatment seeds were soaked in distilled water for the same duration. The seeds were dried to the recommended moisture percentage. The germinated seeds were raised in a seed tray and transplanted in small plastic pots at the 3 to 4 leaf stage. The drought stress treatment was started ten days after transplanting with mild (daily watering), moderate (7 day-interval irrigation), and severe (9 day-interval irrigation) treatment. The results showed that the seed priming with higher concentrations of PEG (-1.2 MPa and -1.6 MPa) significantly increased germination percentage and enhanced drought tolerance of the seedlings than lower concentrations. Whereas, the seed priming with lower concentrations of PEG (-0, -0.4 and -0.8 MPa) under moderate and severe stress on the 3rd week of experiment significantly reduced the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and ethylene production. The present findings revealed that the seed priming of hot pepper seeds with higher concentrations of PEG might well alleviate drought stress disorders.
