Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a tropical fruit that can be consumed fresh or processed. It is a typical respiratory climacteric fruit which is highly perishable because of the loss of water that causes dehydration and thus shrinkage, affecting the fruit appearance; in addition, some quality traits such as fruit weight, firmness and vitamin C content can also be influenced. Therefore, this fruit has a short shelf life. Storage in low temperatures has been assessed to extent the passion fruit shelf life remaining its fruit quality traits; however, information about the application of the hypobaric method in this fruit is null. The objective of this research was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the yellow and purple passion fruit under hypobaric storage conditions in low temperature. Results showed the hypobaric method had a positive effect in decreasing fruit weight loss, declining the loss of firmness, and reducing the degradation of vitamin C during the storage period. It decreased the evolution of ethylene which is positive to delay fruit senescence, and the production of CO2. Finally, it was the only method which avoids the shrinkage completely in the purple passion fruits (‘Gulupa’, ‘Summer Queen’, and ‘Ruby Star’) and showed minor shrinkage in ‘POR1’ (yellow passion fruit). This method is considered as a promising technique to improve fruit storage.

Jaboticaba, belonging to Myrtaceae family, has been a minor tropical fruit tree in Japan and three cultivars, ‘Sabará’, ‘Açu’ and ‘Miúda’, have been distributed. The cultivars are clearly distinguished by their bearing habits and traits of fruits. As Jaboticaba has polyembryony, it is possible to propagate the cultivars in large amounts if techniques selecting seedlings that generated from apomictic embryos exist. This research aims to develop simple sequence repeat (SSR) and morphological markers. Over 50,000 SSRs in the genome extracted from ‘Sabará’ were cataloged using the microsatellite capture sequencing technique, and one SSR primer set was developed for the identification of the three cultivars. Each unique fragment for ‘Açu’ and ‘Miúda’ in the PCR products may be non-specific fragment such as due to ascribed by different genotypes or homologues in flanking SSR region, but then the primer set indicated high robustness because of profiling consistently within and among cultivars. The three jaboticaba cultivars can be also classified by morphological traits of the leaf. ‘Sabará’ has significantly larger leaflets, which have uneven surface and come out from the rachis downwards, than other two cultivars. The size of leaflet is not different significantly between ‘Açu’ and ‘Miúda’, but their leaflet color at young stage differs clearly. The former is green, and the latter cultivar is red. These morphological traits would be influenced by ambient environments but these are practical to classify the three jaboticaba cultivars at the juvenile phase.

Irrigation is essential for crop cultivation in dry and semi-arid areas with limited rainfall and water resources. Efficient and effective use of water resources is required but saving irrigation water is important. The study area is in Ali Faren farm located in west of Djibouti which lies in the Horn of Africa. Djibouti is a very dry region with annual rainfall of about 150 mm and an average annual temperature of 28.6°C. Due to such meteorological conditions, water resources depend mostly on groundwater, and this makes water extremely scare. Therefore, water saving in the agricultural field is indispensable.

This study aims at effective and efficient use of irrigation water in Djibouti. The appropriate irrigation water for tomato cultivation were estimated using CROPWAT provided by FAO and observed meteorological data at Ali Faren farm in Djibouti. The observed meteorological data include air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and sunshine hour. The conditions required for calculating the amount of irrigation water were medium loam soil texture based on the laboratory results of soil particle size test, and the tomato cultivation period from October to March according to the local farmers.

The result showed that the average monthly reference evapotranspiration was 5.7 mm/day annually. Reference Evapotranspiration was maximum in July with 7.9 mm/day and minimum in December with 3.9 mm/day. It was observed that the effective rainfall from October to March was 55.2 mm which corresponds to the local tomato cultivation period. Additionally, the required water amount for tomato crops varied between 2.9 to 4.2 mm/day.

Finally, the appropriate irrigation area of this farm will be determined based on the measured amount of groundwater discharge at an existing well and the estimated irrigation water amount.
