Zoysiagrasses (Zoysia spp.) and Japanese culture Invited Reviewed International journal

International Turfgrass Society Research Journal 15 857 - 864 2025.03
Authorship:Lead author, Corresponding author Language:English Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:International Turfgrass Society
Zoysiagrasses (species of Zoysia Willd.) are native in the western Pacific Rim (including eastern Asia) and in the Indian Ocean. All are perennial warm-season grasses. Five species are found naturally in different habitats in Japan: Japanese lawngrass ( Zoysia japonica Steud.), manilagrass [ Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr.], Zoysia pacifica (Goudswaard) M. Hotta & Kuroki, Zoysia macrostachya Franch. & Sav., and Zoysia sinica Hance. Japan is a high rainfall, mountainous country, predominantly forested but with more limited areas of natural and seminatural grassland (e.g., in drier locations or following clearing) dominated by Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeusch., Miscanthus sinensis Andersson, and Z. japonica . Such grassland areas have historically been used since the fourth century AD as grazing lands for cattle and horses, although their importance has diminished since 1945. Ornamentally, zoysiagrasses (mainly Z. japonica ) were first used as groundcover on tombs more than 1600 years ago, followed by their use in gardens and to stabilize roofs. With the advent of the Samurai warrior class, the formal style of garden with artificial mountains covered by Z. japonica or Z. matrella with ponds became popular for leisure activities, including socializing and entertaining. More widely in agriculture, Z. japonica has had a long history in the production of japonica rice (Oryza sativa subsp. japonica Kato), the staple food in Japan, where it was used to stabilize levee banks around paddy fields. In so many different contexts and applications, zoysiagrasses have strong, wide-ranging, and longstanding historical links to Japanese culture.

An overview of Japanese turfgrass research for the past 50 years Reviewed International journal
Tanaka Satoru
International Turfgrass Society Research Journal 15 3 - 9 2025.03
Authorship:Lead author, Corresponding author Language:English Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:International Turfgrass Society
The Japanese Society of Turfgrass Science (JSTS) has published the Journal of Japanese Society of Turfgrass Science for over 50 years. The objective of this research was to provide an overview of Japanese turfgrass research, including that conducted in universities and other research institutes and by prolific scientists, and to visualize co-authorship networks among these researchers. Data related to the journal from 1972 to 2022, and the Researchmap database, which is the largest database of researchers in Japan, were retrieved. The 10 most prolific authors in the Journal of Japanese Society of Turfgrass Science over 50 years were selected. Lists of journal articles written by authors who had published four or more articles in the Journal of Japanese Society of Turfgrass Science were obtained from the Researchmap database, and 209 journal and proceeding titles were retrieved. A total of 750 authors and 771 articles were retrieved from the Citation Information by National Institute of Informatics (CiNii) Research database. In total, 89 authors published four or more, and 661 authors published three or fewer. Among these, the largest cluster was composed of 294 components. The logarithmic relationship between the rank and number of authors in the cluster suggested a power law relationship. According to the cluster analysis results, 131 authors were not connected to any larger clusters, indicating a lack of collaboration. Plant pathology was not connected to the largest cluster. The number of authors per paper peaked in 1992–2012. Tracking authors with many scientific publications may increase the efficiency of literature research.

Urban areas, many located in lowlands, are often characterised by poor drainage and compacted soil and this can have an impact on the growth of urban trees. Castanopsis sieboldii and Cinnamomum camphora are 2 evergreen tree species distributed throughout southern Japan. Many of these trees are planted in urban areas and their suburbs, and others grow naturally. The differences between these 2 species in their response to soil physical conditions, particularly those towards waterlogging and low aeration conditions, have not previously been studied. In this study, we analysed and compared the tolerance of Castanopsis spp. and Cinnamomum spp. to stagnant soil water conditions and investigated the effects of soil quality improvement using obsidian perlite to increase air content in soil under stagnant and drained water conditions on the growth of these plants in pot experiments. In the study, Castanopsis and Cinnamomum plants were grown on sand alone or mixed with obsidian perlite, and these were subjected to stagnant or drained water treatments. Results: Under stagnant water conditions, all young Castanopsis trees died within approximately 18 months. In contrast, only one young tree of Cinnamomum spp. grown on sand died under stagnant water conditions, and those grown on sand mixed with obsidian perlite were still alive after 35 months under stagnant conditions. Soil quality improvement using perlite increased the leaf abundance (numbers) in both species. Stagnant water with a reduced soil air phase adversely affected RCastanopsis spp. growth, but over the study period of 3 years Cinnamomum spp. was unaffected. When selecting tree species for urban planting, the impact of localised soil conditions on tree physiology may be critical.

Japanese Culture and Plants International journal
Kojiro Suzuki, Patricia Welch, Satoru Tanaka( Role: Joint author)
Asakura Publishing Co., Ltd. 2025.09 ( ISBN:978-4-254-17206-5 )
This book is written in Japanese and English. The book introduces the various uses and history of plants that are commonly observed in Japan and represent its culture. However, many Japanese people have forgotten or are unaware of the knowledge. Along with color photographs of 25 species of woody, grassy and herbaceous plants, it also includes anecdotes about their various uses in culture, industry, and history. It also explains how to distinguish them from botanically close species. The start for writing this book came from a question from a foreign student: "I'd like to know an introductory book that will help me to understand the relationship between plants and Japanese culture."
