    <p>The survey was conducted to compare the nutritional status of goats owned by nomads in Djibouti with that of goats owned by settled farmers, and to gain insights into the nutritional supply of natural forage plants in Djibouti. The survey was conducted on dairy farmers in Ambuli, near the capital, and nomads grazing around Ali-Sabieh in the second city. Dairy farmers own 2-3 ha of pasture and use shallow wells and 1000 L water storage tanks as water sources. Nomads moving distance is 10 km<sup>2</sup>. In this survey, the survey items for goats were age, body length, chest circumference, body height, body weight, blood glucose level, and blood β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) level. According to the results of this survey, the goats raised by nomads had a small body size and low weight for their age. However, the ratio of waist circumference to body weight was high, and it was inferred that the lumen was well developed for the physique. In addition, there was not much difference in blood glucose levels between nomadic and dairy farm animals, and it was presumed that the developing status of nomadic goats was poor. Furthermore, the BHBA levels of nomadic goats were high, suggesting that the organic acid produced in the lumen efficiently supplied energy. These results indicated that the goats bred by nomads were smaller but their nutritional status was not poorer than that of goats bred by dairy farmers.</p>

    <p>The crayfish (<i>Procambarus clarkii</i>) is an invasive alien species consumed as a food source worldwide. However, there is an extremely low demand for it as a food resource in Japan, and it is typically targeted for extermination. One reason for the lack of progress in considering crayfish a sustainable food resource is limited education on the issue during secondary education programs. It is well known that astaxanthin is the pigment responsible for the body color of common red crayfish and crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. At the same time, while there are ample study materials on plant pigments in the science education curriculum in junior high and high schools in Japan, there are no such materials to our knowledge that focus on animal pigments. Therefore, this research sought to develop teaching materials to deepen understanding of color as a food component of crayfish through an experiment involving extracting and separating their pigments. Using pigments extracted from red crayfish exoskeletons, we developed experimental teaching materials to observe astaxanthin by employing thin-layer chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. In addition, an experiment was conducted to observe the effect of different foods on crayfish body color. For the experiment, food was developed to make crayfish bodies white (decolorized) and orange. When the decolorized crayfish were fed norbixin or bixin, which are components of the orange annatto pigment, norbixin tended to accumulate as orange in the exoskeleton more than bixin based on the apparent body color change, color extraction from images, and thin-layer chromatography. These findings are expected to be useful for science and nutrition education, supporting the development of the students’ awareness and understanding of crayfish as a food resource.</p>

  • Advanced maternal age induces fetal growth restriction through decreased placental inflammatory cytokine expression and immune cell accumulation in mice

    <p> Advanced maternal age is a risk factor for female infertility, and placental dysfunction is considered one of the causes of pregnancy complications. We investigated the effects of advanced maternal aging on pregnancy outcomes and placental senescence. Female pregnant mice were separated into three groups: young (3 months old), middle (8–9 months old), and aged (11–13 months old). Although the body weights of young and middle dams gradually increased during pregnancy, the body weight of aged dams only increased slightly. The placental weight and resorption rate were significantly higher, and live fetal weights were reduced in a maternal age-dependent manner. Although mRNA expression of senescence regulatory factors (p16 and p21) increased in the spleen of aged dams, mRNA expression of p16 did not change and that of p21 was reduced in the placenta of aged dams. Using a cytokine array of proteins extracted from placental tissues, the expression of various types of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) factors was decreased in aged dams compared with young and middle dams. The aged maternal placenta showed reduced immune cell accumulation compared with the young placenta. Our present results suggest that models using pregnant mice older than 8 months are more suitable for verifying older human pregnancies. These findings suggest that general cellular senescence programs may not be included in the placenta and that placental functions, including SASP production and immune cell accumulation, gradually decrease in a maternal age-dependent manner, resulting in a higher rate of pregnancy complications.</p>

    <p> Maternal obesity is one of the major risk factors for pregnancy complications and is associated with low-grade chronic systemic inflammation due to higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β. Pregnant women with obesity have abnormal lipid profiles, characterized by higher levels of free fatty acids, especially palmitic acid (PA). Previously, we reported that PA stimulated IL-1β secretion via activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in human placental cells. These observations led us to hypothesize that higher levels of PA induce NLRP3 inflammasome activation and placental inflammation, resulting in pregnancy complications. However, the effects of PA on NLRP3 inflammasome during pregnancy <i>in vivo</i> remain unclear. Therefore, PA solutions were administered intravenously into pregnant mice on day 12 of gestation. Maternal body weight was significantly decreased and absorption rates were significantly higher in PA-injected mice. The administration of PA significantly increased IL-1β protein and the mRNA expression of NLRP3 inflammasome components (<i>NLRP3</i>, <i>ASC</i>, and caspase-1) within the placenta. In murine placental cell culture, PA significantly stimulated IL-1β secretion, and this secretion was suppressed by a specific NLRP3 inhibitor (MCC950). Simultaneously, the number of macrophages/monocytes and neutrophils, together with the mRNA expression of these chemokines increased significantly in the placentas of PA-treated mice. Treatment with PA induced ASC assembling and IL-1β secretion in macrophages, and this PA-induced IL-1β secretion was significantly suppressed in NLRP3-knockdown macrophages. These results indicate that transient higher levels of PA exposure in pregnant mice activates NLRP3 inflammasome and induces placental inflammation, resulting in the incidence of absorption.</p>

    AIAを指標としたラットの盲腸における食下物の滞留と消化試験の予備飼育期間の検討を行った。食下物の滞留については、対照区で60時間後、盲腸切除区で36時間後にAIA排泄が安定するのを確認した。このことから、盲腸に食下物が滞留する時間は最大で24時間と考えられた。また、消化試験については、index法と全糞採取法の結果を比較したが試験法間に差はなく、このことより、AIAを指示物質としたindex法については、予備飼育期間を3日間とすることで実施可能と考えられた。

    <p>In recent years, the settlement of nomads has been promoted in the Republic of Djibouti, and the number of farmer who settle and run livestock is increasing. However, many livestock feeds that can be obtained in the suburbs of cities where humans settle are closer to human diets than those that natural plants. Therefore, this survey was conducted with the aim of comparing the nutritional status of goats owned by nomads in the Djibouti with those owned by settled farmers and collecting insights into the nutritional supply of natural forage plants in the Djibouti.</p><p>The survey was conducted on dairy farmers in Ambuli near the capital and nomads grazing around Ali Sabieh in the second city. Dairy farmers raise around 50 dairy cows, 11 camels, 130 goats, and 50 sheep. They own 2-3 ha of pasture, and have shallow wells and 1000 L water storage tanks as water sources. Nomad was a breeding scale of 30 goats, 6 sheep, 3 donkeys, and 1 camel. The moving distance is 10 km square. In this survey, among the domestic animals, the survey items conducted on breeding female goats were age, body length, chest circumference, body height, body weight, blood glucose level, and blood β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA).</p><p>As a result of this survey, the goats raised by Nomad had a small body size and a light weight for their age. However, the ratio of waist circumference to body weight is high, and it is inferred that the lumen is well developed for the physique. In addition, there is not much difference in blood glucose level between Nomad and dairy farmers, and it is presumed that the nutritional status of Nomad goats is not bad. Furthermore, for BHBA, the value of nomad goats was high, suggesting that the organic acid produced in the lumen efficiently supplies energy. From the above points, it was considered that the goats bred by Nomad were less produced but not in poor nutritional status than the goats bred by dairy farmers.</p>

    中鎖脂肪酸を多く含有するココナッツ油を添加した飼料の給与時の産卵成績、卵質、卵殻質、および血液成分を比較し、産卵に及ぼす影響について検討した。産卵成績、卵質、卵殻質では、有意差は認められなかったが、ココナッツ油の添加濃度依存的に良好な成績を示した。可食部卵黄比率は、添加濃度依存的に低くなる傾向がみられた。一方、血液ガスについては、開始時と比較すると、pO2は対照区が有意(P<0.05)に高い値を示したが、両添加区に差は認められなかった。また、pCO2/pO2比率は有意ではないものの、ココナッツ油を添加した区は、対照区に比べて高い値を示した。本試験は、開始時と終了時で平均気温が5℃低下していた。血液ガス分析結果からpO2において対照区が高まったのに対して、両添加区では差が認められず、外気温低下の影響が緩和されていると推察した。また、このことが産卵率や卵殻強度にも少なからず作用したことによって、ココナッツ油添加により産卵率、卵殻強度が優れる傾向を示したと考えられた。

    ホロホロチョウの冬季の生産性低下を緩和する方法を模索するために、寒さによる産卵成績への影響が少ない産卵鶏とのエネルギー代謝の違いを検討する目的で、血液ガス濃度を比較した。その結果、ホロホロチョウは、摂取した炭水化物からのエネルギー生成効率が、産卵鶏に比べて低いために寒さに対する適応性が低いのではないかと考えられた。

    ブドウ粕(Gra)ならびにレスベラトロール(Res)を給与した成長初期のウズラの発育と抗酸化能について検討することを目的とした。増体量は、Gra区が対照区に対して低い値を示し、飼料効率は、配合飼料のみで換算すると差は認められなかった。抗酸化能は、対照区に対してRes区とGra区が低い値を示した。体重と抗酸化能の関係は、対照区では、体重依存的に抗酸化能が低くなる傾向がみられたが、Res区、Gra区ではその傾向は緩やかで、発育に伴う抗酸化能低下が緩和されると推察された。

    ブロイラーの発育初期における肝機能について飼料摂取の有無による違いを検討することを目的に実施した。その結果、孵化後の飼料採食は、肝臓の働きと密接に関与し、飼料を摂取しない場合、肝臓はその役割を果たさなくなると考えられた。一方で、肝機能値については、腎臓の働きとも密接に関与していることから、今後このことも検討する必要があると考えられた。
