Most terrestrial mammals have a vomeronasal system to detect specific chemicals. The peripheral organ of this system is a vomeronasal organ (VNO) opening to the incisive duct, and its primary integrative center is an accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). The VNO in seals is thought to be degenerated like whales and manatees, unlike otariids, because of the absence of the AOB. However, olfaction plays pivotal roles in seals, and thus we conducted a detailed morphological evaluation of the vomeronasal system of three harbor seals (Phoca vitulina). The VNO lumen was not found, and the incisive duct did not open into the oral cavity but was recognized as a fossa on the anteroventral side of the nasal cavity. This fossa is rich in mucous glands that secrete acidic mucopolysaccharides, which might originate from the vomeronasal glands. The olfactory bulb consisted only of a main olfactory bulb that received projections from the olfactory mucosa, but an AOB region was not evident. These findings clarified that harbor seals do not have a VNO to detect some chemicals, but the corresponding region is a specialized secretory organ.

On May 8, 2023, we found three groups of whales that appeared to be Sato's beaked whales around the Abashiri Submarine Canyon, Hokkaido, Japan, and successfully captured aerial videos using UAVs. In this paper, representing the first of its kind, we describe the external morphology of these whales in images captured by UAVs.
A digest of the aerial videos captured during this survey is available on the YouTube channel of the Tokyo University of Agriculture.

Throughout the year, various cetaceans appear along the coasts of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Nemuro Strait in Hokkaido, Japan. Since 2006, whale-watching boats have been operating in both areas, providing a valuable platform for studying the ecology of whales. The present study aims to clarify the seasonal patterns and inter-annual variations in sightings of cetaceans in both areas based on records from whale-watching boats. Monthly numbers of sailing days and days on which each species was observed were tallied from the sighting records of whale-watching boats operating off the coast of Abashiri in the Sea of Okhotsk and Rausu in the Nemuro Strait. For species with high numbers of sightings, detection rates were calculated, and seasonal and inter-annual variations were examined for each species in each area. In both areas, minke whales were sighted more frequently in the spring, Dall's porpoises in the summer, and Baird's beaked whales in the autumn. Although Pacific white-sided dolphins were most frequently observed in July, sightings also occurred in September and October off the coast of Abashiri. The period of sightings for minke whales was longer and the detection rate was higher off the coast of Abashiri than off Rausu. Conversely, the period of sightings for Dall's porpoise was longer off the coast of Rausu, and killer and sperm whales, less frequently sighted off the coast of Abashiri, were frequently sighted off Rausu. In recent years, the detection rate of minke whales has decreased in both areas, while that of fin whales has been increasing. Since factors affecting the population dynamics of both species are currently unknown, ongoing monitoring is vital for gaining a better understanding of the dynamics of both populations.

Male sperm whales are under pressure to grow larger in order to increase their mating opportunities, which could lead them to more efficiently forage in high latitude feeding grounds. Movement patterns of male sperm whales in Nemuro Strait, Japan, were investigated horizontally and vertically using land-based observation and bio-logging methods to determine how they facilitate foraging in the narrow submarine canyon. Eleven tagged whales showed the distinct diel pattern for dive depth, as it was deeper at night than during the day. Five-year data of land-based observation and GPS data from six tagged whales revealed the tendency of whales to change the north-south direction of their horizontal movement every 4–6 h, and this movement direction was not related to the direction of the current. Their periodic heading change is thought to be a consequence of the whales making two round trips each day within the foraging area, one during the day to shallow layers and one during the night to deep layers. These tactics may help the whales to search for prey in this narrow submarine canyon efficiently. Most whales changed their direction of movement in a similar manner, which is probably due to the whales’ tendency to stay close enough to each other to obtain information about the prey environment using the echolocation clicks of other whales. The results emphasize the ability of male sperm whales to adapt their foraging tactics according to the prey environment of their habitat and intense pressure to grow faster may be the drive for this ability. The importance of social cohesion among foraging male sperm whales was also suggested.
