土壌の拡散係数は土壌中のガス移動を予測する上の基本的な物性値である。本章では土壌の拡散係数の測定法の一つであるCurrie法の基礎方程式、原理、実験方法について紹介した。また、土壌拡散係数を予測するモデル式（Buckingham式、Penman式、Milington and Quirk式、Moldrup式）のそれぞれの特徴や、同じデータセットを用いた場合での各モデルの結果の比較を行った。
土壌の肥沃度指数は科学的なプロセスに基づいた土壌の評価法として現在世界中で研究が進められている。土壌の肥沃度指数の算出方法は様々に提案されており、例えばLiner and multiple regression analysis, pedotransfer functions analysis, principal component analysis, scoring function analysis等がある。本章ではそれぞれの算出方法の紹介や優位な点や不利な点等や土壌データの扱い方について総合的に論じている。
