    Traditional jamu production in Yogyakarta has been conducted for centuries and is attached to the local wisdom and culture. This study is aimed to clarify the characteristics and analyze the challenge of traditional jamu production in Yogyakarta. This study is conducted through a case study at Seruni Putih Women Cooperative in Kiringan Village which is known as the Tourism Village of Traditional Jamu in Yogyakarta. From this study, it is clarified that traditional jamu production in Kiringan Village is predominantly carried out by the Seruni Putih Women Cooperative and still relies on traditional recipes and methods passed down through generations, using a variety of local herbs, spices, and other natural ingredients. However, traditional jamu production in Kiringan Village has been facing several challenges, namely difficulty in matching the consistency, attractive packaging, and efficient distribution networks; aging generation among jamu producers; and limited access to high-quality raw materials, reliable supply chains, and modern production equipment.

    This study examines the ways that Kiringan, Bantul, Yogyakarta, is creating an integrated home-based Jamu industry in order to diversify its product offerings and enhance product quality. The product and asset of home-based Jamu industry are still traditional and not diversified enough, which could result in a significant reliance on a single source of income and increase the community’s vulnerability to economic volatility. Total number of producers in this study were 25, and we asked about their knowledge and the understanding of Halal and Good Manufacturing practice (GMP) by using likert-scale. The results showed that 86.96% of the households were aware of the significance of the production staff hygiene system in herbal drink producing facilities, however, in the reality, perception of hygiene among producers is often limited to washing with their hands and water. The finding suggest that the adoption of Halal and Good Manufacturing Practices is critical to the long-term viability of Jamu producers in Kiringan Village. Also, modernizing traditional techniques, expanding market distribution, and promoting sustainable cultivation practice may boost the scalability and quality of Jamu products. This all-encompassing approach guarantees not only ensure the sustainable growth of the Jamu industry but also highlights its potential as a valuable community resource.

    Development of Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan (KPH) is a policy of the Indonesian government to give wider chances for local people in rural area to manage the forest more efficiently and sustainably. However, almost half of the total forest area in the country have not been intensively managed, only few reports have discussed the relationship between development of KPH and local livelihoods. Hence, this study aimed to examine the motives for community involvement, particularly in agricultural practices in forest areas at KPH Kebonharjo, Central Java. This study was conducted through cross-sectional survey and data were analysed using word descriptions and verbatim discussions. The findings of this study indicated that the forest area of KPH Kebonharjo covers about 32.5% of the total area of 42 villages and the community involvement in agricultural activities in forest area was quite high in some villages. Income-generating activities were the main motive and household size, capital, knowledge, and access to credit were investigated as important roles in farmers’ decisions to be involved in such activities. The study suggests that future research needs to focus on identifying the socio-economic perspectives and livelihood strategies of local communities.
