This study examined growth characteristics, population structure, habitat and phenology of H. citrina as measure of preservation of grassland ecosystems using a `species approach'. As an indicator species, H. citrina in semi-natural grasslands in Karuizawa, Nagano prefecture, is an ideal subject. We analyzed ecological characteristics of H. citrina in the cultivated populations in Karuizawa botanical gardens and natural populations in semi-natural grasslands in Karuizawa.
