    <p>We investigated the flight behavior of large birds around a wind farm constructed on a hill in eastern Okhotsk, Hokkaido, and examined the possibility of adverse impacts on the birds. A one-year fixed-point observation survey revealed that our target birds, geese, swans, and sea eagles most frequently flew at altitudes within wind turbine rotor swept ranges, with some individuals observed flying close to the turbines. Sea eagles frequently engaged in circling and ascending flights near the turbines. A preliminary estimation of the annual number of birds colliding with wind turbines indicated the possibility of the collision for all target birds and certain wind turbines showed extremely high risk of collision. It was also considered that the energy consumption required to detour around large wind turbines may have a particularly large impact on geese and swans.</p>

    White-Tailed Sea Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) become sexually mature at 5–6 years and the conditions of habitats and flight paths for local and seasonal movements in the nomadic period between post-fledging and breeding territory occupation are important in terms of population demographic relevance. The purpose of this study is to elucidate post-fledging movements, seasonal migrations, and habitats of immature White-Tailed Sea Eagles by GPS tracking. GPS transmitters were attached to nestlings of White-Tailed Sea Eagles at the middle basin of Amur River (around Slavyanka; 49°50'N, 136°76'E) and Lake Chukchagir (51°59'N, 136°36'E) in Khabarovsk Krai, Russia, and at Abashiri (44°1'N, 144°16'E) in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, in the breeding seasons of 2017–2022. Habitats used by GPS-tagged immatures were investigated with satellite images and field observations. The dispersion of post-fledging sea eagles from their natal nests occurred in autumn (September–October) for both sites in Khabarovsk and Abashiri. The first destinations in dispersal movements were river tributaries or lakes in floodplains in Khabarovsk (n=4) and rivers in Abashiri (n=2). Start timing and the first destination of emigration from natal sites for both breeding areas was considered to be related with upstreaming of salmonid fish for spawning. All of three juveniles fledged in Khabarovsk and tracked at least until their first winter wintered at the coastal area of Primorsky Krai, Russia, approximately 800–1,000 km south of their birthplaces, however, one juvenile took a different migration route to the wintering ground than the other two. Besides, two eagles tracked for more than two years after their birth in Khabarovsk showed the same migration routes in spring and autumn, and in the first year and subsequent years, respectively. Meanwhile, juvenile eagles fledged in Abashiri (n=2) moved to the places up to about 150 km south of their natal sites in their first winter, despite the fact that some major wintering grounds for sea eagles exist around their birthplace. Previous study reported that some colour-ringed immature White-Tailed Sea Eagles fledged at nests in Nemuro (43°19'N, 145°35'E), located approximately 100 km southeast direction of Abashiri, had been observed around their birthplaces in winter (Shiraki, 2002). Not only food availability but also genetic factor may be involved in determination of the wintering area. White-Tailed Sea Eagles over one year old from the nests in Khabarovsk (n=2) and in Abashiri (n=1) visited the vicinity of their natal sites during spring and summer. As White-Tailed Sea Eagles are known to have a tendency to nest in the natal area, young eagles might assess breeding opportunities around their natal sites. Immature White-Tailed Sea Eagles with GPS mostly stayed at habitats with food supplied from human activities, such as small fish discarded in fishery, marine waste, Sika Deer (Cervus nippon) residue left behind after hunting or killed in collisions with vehicles or trains, during winter in both of Primorsky and Hokkaido.

    <p>Fifty-two white-tailed eagles have been killed by collisions of wind turbines in Hokkaido with the increase of wind farms. Furthermore, many projects of wind farms are planned and the environment assessments are underway in Japan. The final goal of this study is to understand important flyways and stopover or wintering habitats of whitetailed eagles in far east of Russia and in Japan. </p><p>As the first step of this study, we captured two and four nestlings at the nest sites of middle basin of Amur river in 2017 summer and at Lake Chukchagirskoye in lower Amur in 2018 summer, respectively. GPS transmitters were equipped to these nestlings and telemetry trackings were carried out to identify their migration routes and their habitats after their fledging.</p><p>One eagle captured in 2017 had been tracked till 8 January 2018 and this eagle wintered near a dumping ground probably with fish waste in the coast of primorye. This eagle also stayed at three stopover sites on the way from the natal site to wintering site and all sites were river basins. The eagle did not migrate to Japan, but some important data for conservation of this species in Japan and in Russia were acquired. The four eagles with transmitters equipped in 2018 summer have been currently tracked.</p>

    <p>The Eurasian Skylark, <i>Alauda arvensis</i>, is a passerine bird that mainly breeds in open habitats, such as lowland grasslands and farmlands. However, recent studies have shown that they form breeding territories on volcanic and alpine slopes in central/northern Japan. During the 2018 breeding season, we investigated the density and habitat selection of Skylarks on the volcanic slopes above timber line, of Mt. Tarumae, Hokkaido. Our results showed that there were 27 Skylark territories in the study area, with a density of 7.26 territories per square kilometer. This spatial arrangement was dense around the eastern slope. Skylarks favored habitats with a low vegetation height. The quantity of short plant species, i.e. <i>Carex oxyandra </i>and <i>Arcterica nana</i> was larger in territories than in randomly selected points. <i>C</i>.<i> oxyandra</i> plays important roles not only in forming low vegetation, but also in available and limited nest material in their breeding territories on the volcanic slopes. These results suggest that Skylarks occupy areas of low vegetation with <i>C. oxyandra</i>, as there are limited resources available for nest materials within the breeding territories that are on the volcanic slope above a timber line.</p>

    Hokkaido is one of the major wintering grounds for
    migratory White-tailed Sea-eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla)
    from Russian Far East and is also a breeding area to
    residents of this species. A genetic differentiation between
    the northern and eastern areas, which are the main
    breeding grounds for Hokkaido resident population, have
    been suggested in previous study. The aims of this study are
    to obtain basic information on the natal dispersal of this
    eagle, and to find out differences in the dispersal patterns
    between local natal areas, also considering relation to
    genetic structure of breeding population in Hokkaido.
    Three nestlings (hereinafter called NJs) in the northern
    area, two (EJs) in the eastern area and one (BJ) at a nest
    near the border of both areas were equipped with GPS
    transmitters in 2021-2024 and have been tracked. NJs and
    BJ mostly moved along coast in the north-south direction,
    while EJs moved throughout the eastern part, including
    inland, during their first year after birth. Major wintering
    grounds did not overlap between NJs and EJs. Latitudes of
    the southern limit in the range of each yearling eagle were
    43°26’N–43°58’N for NJs and BJ, and 42°42’N–42°55’N for Ejs.
    Additionally, the seasonal movements and habitats in the
    second and subsequent years for each eagle were almost
    the same to those of the first year. These results suggest
    that dispersal movement patterns may differ between local
    natal areas and may also be related to genetic structure in
    Hokkaido breeding population.
