A study on value of green infrastructure with multiple benefits of homestead trees and hedges Igune
Teruaki Irie, Saki Harada, Hitoshi Uchida, Masatoshi Takeuchi
Journal of Agriculture Science., Tokyo University of Agriculture. ( Tokyo University of agriculture ) 65 ( 1 ) 9 - 18 2020.06 [Refereed]
Academic JournalResearch paper (scientific journal) Joint Work
Homestead trees and hedges, known as Igune, have been a feature of the traditional rural landscape in the Miyagi and Iwate prefectures for at least 400 years. We evaluated the green infrastructure value of the multiple benefits provided by Igune. In particular, we concentrated on the cultural and lifestyle values, windbreak effects, and habitat for forest and forest-edge living birds.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a collaborative, student-led approach to park design, during the comprehensive learning period at Kinuta and Kitami elementary schools. We used a three-step design in the program: first, identify the region's assets and character; second, develop individual views and group consensus around desired outcomes; and third, to encourage ownership of the park's design by the students. The first step of the process is the recognition of the region's character through the production of a playground map by the students, after learning about the area's natural resources and heritage through play-oriented tasks from the regional supervisor. The second step aimed to develop students' analytical skills by encouraging them to think individually about the park's design, then to build consensus through discussion and negotiation with their peers with the role of facilitator by university teachers and also with students practicing the role of facilitator for the university teacher and students. Finally, the third step aimed to inspire students' confidence and sense of ownership of their park design, to enhance future engagement with the region's stewardship. This regional educational program involved local administrations, elementary schools, universities and consultant specialist advisers, whose collective roles and responsibilities need to be clarified to ensure effective collaboration within the wider educational system.

This study aims to demonstrate how simulated thermal and wind dynamics can be integrated into urban environmental planning. Three dimensional GIS and CFD simulations were employed to investigate the effects of green space and wind flows on urban cooling, using the Setagaya University campus as a case study.

A Study on Improvement of the Value of Hedgerows of Green Infrastructure in Denmark on based of Simulating Wind Dynamics by Meteorological observation.
ESRI World User Conference 2019 (San Diego) 2019.07 - 2019.07 ESRI
This study improved the value of hedgerows in the
catchment. The hedgerows distributed most in Non-irrigated arable LAND on the ridge, hedgerows play important roles in mitigating soil erosion by wind.
This study proposed visualized hedgerows planning method in based on simulating wind dynamics in the field scale and the landscape scale by Aerial sensing and GIS. This visualized planning method can collaborate and help decision make with several stakeholders, policy maker, landowner, farmer, resident. And, it be able to propose hedgerows planting plan with regional landscape character. -
A study on value of green infrastructure with multiple benefits of homestead trees and hedgerows "Igune"
ESRI World User Conference 2019 (San Diego) 2019.07 - 2019.07 ESRI
The green infrastructure of Igune homestead trees can clearly contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and delivers simultaneous cultural, traditional, and biodiversity co-benefits, which together can support the regeneration of regional landscape identities.

Urban green infrastructure planning methods to mitigate urban heat island impacts and associated night-time temperatures using Landsat8 data
Teruaki IRIE
International Conference 2017. Urban Green Infrastructure - Connecting People and Nature for Sustainable Cities. (Malmö, Sweden) 2017.09 - 2017.09 University of Copenhagen
This study's hypothesis is that large heat islands can be fragmented through the use of open space, which allow flows of cool air to reduce night-time temperatures. Using data from Landsat8, a four step method, comprising data collection, data analysis, decision making and final planning, is proposed to enable planning for mitigation of urban heat island effects. (1) Land cover and existing daily surface air temperature maps were generated from the Landsat8 data and summer observatory data from the Meteorological Agency. (2) Surface temperature and air temperature (at 0500 hours) maps were derived using a formula incorporating the ratio of green space within different spatial scales within the survey areas. (3) Predictive maps of surface temperature and air temperature (at 0500 hours) were generated using three alternative green space plans (focused along riversides, streets and in school grounds, respectively), using the same formula. (4) This scenario appraisal approach can contribute to new green infrastructure planning to mitigate the increasingly important issue of urban heat island impacts and night-time temperatures.
