現在の漁業が抱える問題を、地域スケールから地球規模スケールで把握するよう努め、基礎的な生態学的視点を持って問題解決に貢献したいと思っています。
自然を利用する場合、直近、かつ一時的な価値よりも、10年後、50年後でも失われない、失ってしまわない価値をつねに考えます。

ほとんどの魚介類は野生動物です。野生動物ですから、人間にとって役立つ魚介類も、役立たない魚介類も、どちらも共にひとつの生態系のメンバーです。それぞれは複雑な因果関係で結ばれています。
つまり、「魚で儲ける」ためには、「儲かる魚」のことばかり考えていてはダメ、ということになります。
これからの水産増殖ではもっと生態系が考慮されるべきです。そのためには、基礎的な生態学や進化生物学、それらを合わせた保全生態学の知識が必要です。
私は「獲るために守る」、「自然とうまく付き合って増やす」という水産増殖を目指しています。この生態系を考慮した水産増殖を模索する上で、豊かな自然と水産資源を誇るオホーツク海は、恰好のフィールドです。オホーツクにある生物産業学部だからこそできる勉強・研究があり、ここでの経験は、世界の水産をより良く変えるきっかけになると信じます。
