私の専門である言語学・英語学は言葉を研究する学問です。皆さんは言語学にどんなイメージを持っているでしょうか。
言葉はみなさんが生まれた時から触れている身近な物です。「知っていることが多い」のにわざわざ研究することってあるのだろうかと思う人もいるでしょう。
しかし，これほど身近な存在なのに意外と分かっていないことが多いのです(人間関係もそうですね)。
例えば「外国語学習は失敗することもあるのに，なぜ母語獲得は成功するのか」はまだまだ良く分かっていません。
また、言葉は字義どおりに理解されないときがありますね。例えば社長が会議室に入ってきたときに「あーこの部屋、暑いねえ」と言えば、部下たちは「エアコンつけましょうか」と言うでしょう。社長は一言も「エアコンをつけて欲しい」とは言っていませんが、このように理解されます。なぜでしょうか。
このように言葉にはまだまだ解明されていない不思議な側面がたくさんあります。私の専門はこのようなことを明らかにする学問です。
