Abstract
In Mongolia, overgrazing and the resulting degradation of rangelands are recognized as serious issues. To address rangeland degradation, we sought to develop a broad-scale vegetation classification of Mongolian rangeland communities focusing on regional characteristics; in addition, we sought to clarify the spatial distributions of communities and the environmental drivers of the distributions. Between 2012 and 2016, we surveyed vegetation in 278 plots (each 10 × 10 m 2) in various regions of Mongolia (43–50° N, 87–119° E) in plots where grazing pressure is low relative to adjacent areas. The data were grouped into vegetation units using a modified two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). We then explored the regional characteristics of species compositions and community distributions, as well as relationships between distributions and climatic variables. The modified TWINSPAN classified the vegetation data into three cluster groups, each of which corresponds to a particular type of zonal vegetation (i.e., forest steppe, steppe, and desert steppe). The aridity index was identified as an important driver of the distributions of all cluster groups, whereas longitude and elevation were important determinants of the distribution of clusters within cluster groups. Western regions, which are characterized by higher elevation and continentality compared to eastern regions, have lower mean temperature and precipitation during the wettest quarter, leading to differences in species composition within cluster groups. Regional differences in species composition reflect differences in phytogeographic origin. Thus, the framework of species composition and distributional patterns in Mongolian rangeland communities was demonstrated in relation to climatic and geographical factors.DOI: 10.1093/jpe/rtac100

The Mongolian steppe is among the largest undeveloped grasslands in the world. However, degradation of this vegetation has recently been recognized as a serious national problem. Detailed systematization of the vegetation based on species composition is required to mitigate losses in this unique habitat. We aimed to compile information on steppe vegetation in western Mongolia, where there is still a dearth of data. Vegetation data were collected in 2010 and 2011 using phytosociological procedures around the periphery of the Great Lakes basin and the southern Khangai Mountains. Plant communities were then differentiated on the basis of differential species identified from the abundance data for each stand. Four main phytosociological plant communities were identified: Agropyron cristatum—Artemisia frigida, Echinops gmelinii—Artemisia rutifolia, Anabasis brevifolia—Stipa glareosa, and Hordeum turkestanicum—Artemisia caespitosa communities. The Agropyron cristatum—Artemisia frigida community was broadly distributed in western Mongolia; the species composition of this community was representative of steppe communities in western sectors of the country. Other communities were members of the class Stipetea glareosae-gobicae, which integrates the desert and desert steppe communities. Some diagnostically important species of steppe communities in the central sector were absent from the steppe communities distributed in western Mongolia. Moreover, characteristic species of desert steppe communities, such as Stipa glareosa, Stipa gobica, Allium polyrhizum, and Gypsophila desertorum, occurred in the steppe vegetation.

A. D. Simukov is a researcher who studied about fauna, flora, social structures of nomadic society and so on throughout Mongolia during 1920's-30's. We translated one of his papers regarding nomadic life in Övörkhangai prefecture. The paper discussed about locations where herders used as the seasonal camp and grazing site. We can find that livestock groups composed of each species were distributed to different locations by the Lamyn-Gegeen monastery.
