From 2020 to 2023, we conducted a survey on the influence of cutting Pleioblastus chino on Japanese oak wilt (in regards to mortality or the effect on the living trees that had been attacked) growing on the forest floor in long-abandoned Quercus serrata and Quercus acutissima forest in the Kanto region. Japanese oak wilt caused by Platypus quercivorus spread from the forest edges in the study site during its initial stage. In particular Q. serrata with large trunk circumferences tended to be damaged initially. Two to three years after the survey started, damage to Q. serrata and Q. acutissima increased, and there was no longer a tendency for damage caused to be correlated with cutting P. chino or trunk circumference. Cutting of P. chino had no impact on Q. serrata, in the short term, but impacted the vegetation structure minimally.

The loss of habitat due to the development of housing and the abandonment of management of green spaces has led to a decline in the population of the evergreen perennial herb, Asarum tamaense Makino that grows around Tama Hills. To evaluate the conservation method for A. tamaense, we assigned a “cutting area” in which Pleioblastus chino (Franchet & Savatier) Makino was cut once a year, and a “non-cutting area” with unregulated P. chino, in the secondary forests of Kanto region. A. tamaense was transplanted to four areas with different topographical conditions (valley, south-facing slope, north-facing slope, and mid-slope ridge) in both the cutting and non-cutting zones in the study area. We investigated the above-ground mortality rate, the number of leaves, and the flowering status (flowering rate, the number of flowers, and the number of times flowers set) between 2015 and 2020. The survey results revealed that A. tamaense can grow even under the P. chino forest floor in deciduous broad-leaved forests. However, transplanting A. tamaense under cut P. chino increased the number of leaves per individual; in addition, it increased the flowering rate and number of flowers, especially in the southern slope. Therefore, when transplanting A. tamaense under a deciduous broad-leaved forest, it is preferable to transplant it to an area where P. chino is cut, for increased seed reproduction.

In abandoned secondary forests, Pleioblastus chino can grow in an unregulated manner and suppress the growth of the herbaceous layer. Two Callicarpa species, C. japonica and C. mollis are constituents of the shrub layer in secondary forests. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cutting P. chino in every summer on the seed germination and survival rate of seedlings of each species. As a result of seed germination experiments in the laboratory and in the secondary forest, it was found that the germination rate was high under light conditions just after collection and that was improved even under dark conditions at low temperature by wet storage for 6 months. The survival rate of each species was higher in the cutting P. chino plot than in the non-cutting plot.

The evergreen perennial herb, Asarum tamaense (Aristolochiaceae), is an endangered species distributed across the Tama Hills in the Kanto region of Japan. In abandoned secondary forests, Pleioblastus chino can grow unregulated and suppress the growth of the herbaceous layer. This study investigated how cutting P. chino affects the growth and flowering of A. tamaense in an abandoned secondary forest. Two study areas (cutting and non-cutting) were defined in an area of the Tama Hills secondary forests that had been untouched for approximately 40 years. P. chino was cut with a sickle in only the cutting area during the summers of 2010 - 2018. Each April from 2015 to 2018, in both areas, the number of patches, leaves and flowers were counted in 30 quadrats, 5m × 5m at each quadrat, and the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and soil moisture content were checked. The cutting area had less the number of patches than the non-cutting area, and there were no differences in the patches increase rate over time between the areas. The number of leaves and flowers and the increase rate in the cutting area were higher; as the number of leaves increased, the number of flowers increased. PAR was also higher in the cutting area. These results suggest that cutting P. chino contributes the conservation of A. tamaense.
