The soil quality is measured through the use of indicators that measure or reflect the environmental status or sustainability condition of the ecosystem. Microbial attributes are classified as biological indicators. The use of these indicators in the soil analysis routine are promising. In this research, the effect of two land uses (paddy or upland field) with two different soil management (conventional system or conventional system with previous organic matter applied) on soil microbial properties was evaluated in a farmer’s field. The soil enzymatic activities (urease, glucosidase and arylsulfatase), with exception of acid phosphatase, showed sensitive and consistent responses to the effect of soil management. The results showed higher soil enzymatic activity in paddy than upland field. Total C and N were 1.3-1.8 times increased by organic amendments as well as N mineralization 1.8-2.4 times, while enzyme activities in upland soil 1.5-2.4 times, although 0.7-1.3 times in paddy soil. In both land-uses, the large amount of organic fertilizer applications in previous organic amendments contributed to improve the soil chemical properties and soil microbiological activities.

Soil microbes working for nutrient dynamics and global environments
Inubushi Kazuyuki
Soil Microorganisms 77 ( 2 ) 93 - 100 2023.10
Language:Japanese Publisher:Japanese Society of Soil Microbiology
Soil microbes are playing important roles for nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystem and impacts on global environments. Soil microbial biomass works as driving force for dynamics of plant nutrients in crop production.
Chloroform-fumigation method was modified to determine microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen in wet paddy field,
together with soil ATP to find influences of long-term fertilization and flooding. Adenylate energy charge showed
adaptation of microbes in paddy soil for anaerobic conditions and higher resilience than those in upland soils. Slowrelease fertilizer applied to 4 types of paddy soils did not change phospholipid fatty acid compositions of soil microbes as compared to urea application. Elevated CO2 concentration increased soil microbial biomass C in paddy soil along with rice growth, but did not microbial biomass N except in surface soil at harvesting time. Elevated CO2 concentration also increased CH4 emission from paddy field. Application of steel-making slag reduced CH4 emission and increased rice yield in Vietnamese paddy fields. Water-saving rice cropping also reduced CH4 emission and not changed rice yield and N2O emission in Indian paddy fields. Salinity tolerant cyanobacteria were isolated under water stress conditions in arid soil in Inner-Mongolia and Uzbekistan, showing plant growth resistance under saline conditions. -

<p>Studies have shown that humic substances in soil organic matter have various functionalities. In this study, we focused on water-soluble organic components, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM), and applied the method proposed by Tsuda et al. (2016), which has been used to analyze water-extractable humic substances (WEHS) in DOM in lakes, to soil samples for the first time to quantify WEHS in farmlands. The amount of WEHS in agricultural soils in Kanagawa Prefecture was found to be proportional to the amount of water extracted organic matter (WEOM) for the first time in this study. The amount of WEOM was generally higher in the crop layer than in the next surface layer immediately below the crop layer; the same trend was observed for WEHS. The amount of WEHS in WEOM varied greatly among various study sites. However, the percentage of WEHS showed a strong positive correlation between the cultivated and next surface layers. These results indicate that the total amount of soil organic matter influences the amount of WEOM and the amount of WEHS in WEOM. Moreover, the nitrogen in WEOM was found to be mainly present in non-WEHS and almost WEHS. The high positive correlation between the amounts of carbon and nitrogen in WEHS shows that the nitrogen compounds present in WEHS are chemical structures that are constrained to some extent.</p>
