This study aims to determine the structures of Japanese CSA with third-party coordinators, and
relationships among the members. Farm H (Tokyo, Japan), which provides vegetables to three CSA
organizations, was studied. The survey results showed that some CSA principles were modified and changed
so that producers and consumers could more easily join. For example, production and consumption were not
always in proximity. The transaction contracts can be made for short periods of time, and the frequency of
deliveries also varied from once a week to once a month. In addition, the participation of farming was not
positioned as “farm work,” but rather as an “agricultural event”. In that context, coordinators play the
following important roles : (1) recruiting members and publicizing activities, (2) handling administrative
procedures (collecting payments, etc.), (3) providing pick-up points, and (4) collecting opinions from the
consumer side regarding the producer. Having a coordinator encourages producers and consumers to
participate in CSA easily. On the other hand, producer-consumer interaction was limited because the
administration of CSA was mainly managed by acoordinator rather than by volunteer members. It would be extremely important to develop consumers who can be involved in CSA management, even in limited areas
such as running the producer and consumer exchange events.
