    Esterification of cellulose with 4-phenylphenoxy acetic acid (PPA) in 1-butyl-3-methlimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) has been performed with the aim of preparing novel liquid crystalline cellulose derivative. Effect of reaction conditions, such as type of esterification reagents and ionic species, on the thermal properties and solubility of the polysaccharide derivatives has been investigated. As the result, cellulose 4-phenylphenoxyacetate (CPA) with the maximum degree of substitution (DS) of 1.17 was attained by using 1,3-diisopropylcarbodiimide as the esterification reagent and by applying 8 molar parts of PPA against 1 molar parts of hydroxyl groups in cellulose. The esterification reaction was performed at 100 °C for 72 h without basic catalyst. The CPA retained almost constant dynamic storage modulus up to 120 °C and showed the 10 % weight decrease at 285 °C, that was 57 °C higher than the original cellulose. On the other hand, within the range of DS attained, CPA did not form mesophase on heating or in the solution state in dimethylsulfoxide and N,N-dimethylacetamide.

    The male German cockroach Blattella germanica (L.) exhibits a characteristic courtship display by raising its wings, turning around, and exposing its tergal glands on the seventh and eighth tergites to the female. The male secretes a courtship pheromone from the tergal glands which induces a strong feeding response in the female, facilitating copulation. Upon multiple, detailed microscopic observations of the courtship display, we found that the male markedly expanded the intersegmental area between the sixth and seventh tergites, but deflated this area as soon as it perceived a tactile stimulus on its back by the female, while continuing to raise its wings and exposing the tergal glands. The intersegmental area is composed of two parts: a membranous posterior part of the sixth tergite, and the regular intertergal membrane. The membranous posterior part was found to be crescentic in shape and clearly separated from the intertergal membrane by traverse tongue-shaped plates. Scanning electron microscopic observation revealed that there were many orifices or pores in the membranous crescentic zone, and its morphological structure was clearly different from that of the intertergal membrane. Our observations suggest that the crescentic zone is likely a secretory gland that may play an important role at the beginning of the male courtship display, different from the tergal glands.

    Preparation of glycolether lignin from Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) woodmeal by acid-catalyzed solvolysis in 2-phenoxyethanol has been performed. The glycolether lignin had the hydroxyl content of 0.677 mmol/g and average molecular weight of 2.5×10^3. The glycolether lignin showed good solubility to various common organic solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, 2-butanone and chloroform. Crosslinked glycolether lignin, obtained by esterification with adipoyl chloride in acetone, showed thermal stability up to 230 °C.
