In this study, on the assumption that the use of pronouns in English textbooks affects learners’ command of pronouns, we investigated the occurrences of pronouns in high school English textbooks used in Japan and compared them with those found in written and spoken English corpora, BNC and COCA using a Chi-squared test. We found that the distribution of personal pronouns can reflect the characteristics of the genre and discourse type and that more personal pronouns may indicate that the corpus is spoken or narrative. We also found that high school English textbooks in Japan can be characterized by the frequent use of personal pronouns, overuse of “they-pronouns, more use of “he-pronouns” than “she-pronouns.” Further studies on the contents of the texts in each textbook are needed to verify the above findings.

Teaching Frame Markers for Writing Research Reports International conference
Kobayashi, Kaoru; Hagiwara, Akiko
JALT 2022 Conference 2022.11 The Japan Association for Language Teaching

Language:English Presentation type:Oral presentation (general)
Venue:Fukuoka, Japan Country:Japan
In the presentation, the efficacy of intervention in scientific writing was discussed. Frame markers are used to indicate the sequences or stages of discourse acts and announce their goals. They are useful when writing experimental procedures. Through a corpus-based study, we found undergraduate students inappropriately use frame markers when writing research reports. We surmise that giving specific instructions for using frame markers would help students effectively write the methods section of research reports.

In this presentation, how and where the first-person pronoun “we” is used in research articles written in English by authors of different linguistic backgrounds will be discussed. A research article corpus was created to analyze the uses of “we” in different sections of research articles. The meta-textual uses of “we” were also examined using the verbs that collocate with “we.” The results show that “we” is widely used throughout science research articles.

A Comparison of Metadiscourse Markers in Scientific Research Abstracts: An Interlanguage Study International conference

We analyzed the use of metadiscourse markers in research abstracts written by Japanese EFL science majors (EFL corpus: 255 abstracts written by upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in life sciences, 46,717 words) in comparison with two referent corpora: 1,900 abstracts written by Japanese scientists (JS corpus: 353,798 words), and 1,900 abstracts written by scientists in English speaking countries (ES corpus: 340,813). We found learners used metadiscourse markers to describe concrete ideas such as the experiment's purpose and procedure, but their use of metadiscourse markers that connect abstract ideas in the introduction as well as in the conclusion was limited.
