<p>This report describes the breeding of long-clawed shrews under laboratory conditions. During pairing, females waggled their waists, causing horizontal shaking of the tail, and walked around the males. Mounting was observed on the second day of pairing. In the two pairs with successful subsequent deliveries, mounting was observed 51 and 9 times with average (±<i>SD</i>) durations of 39 ± 59 and 56 ± 54 s, respectively. Similar multiple-mounting behavior was also observed in those pairs for which mating attempts proved unproductive. The gestational period was approximately 21–22 days. Weaning was successful in 4 of the 12 observed deliveries, and the weaning period was approximately 31–36 days. During the lactation period, the females constructed dome-like nests using straw mulch. The activity time of lactating mothers increased as the lactation period advanced. Weanlings attained almost the same body size as subadults, although their body weight did not increase until nine weeks after weaning.</p>

<p>The emu (<i>Dromaius novaehollandiae</i>) is a new poultry. In this study, we investigated the haplotype composition of mitochondrial DNA among emu populations farmed in Japan. We sequenced the D-loop region in 109 individuals, and detected four substitution sites and three haplotypes (Hap-a, -b, and -c). Hap-a was the most frequently observed haplotype in the Japanese populations. Although Hap-c was a rare haplotype in not only Japanese but also Australian populations, it was detected with high frequency in the Japanese farmed population. The AMOVA indicated that 9% of total variance was “among population”. The <i>F</i><sub>ST</sub> value was 0.087 and genetic differentiation was significant (<i>P</i><0.01). These results may contribute to conserving the genetic resources available for the Japanese emu industry.</p>

A recent report showed higher oxygen consumption, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production and mitochondrial localisation in trophectoderm cells than in the inner cell mass of mouse blastocysts. We hypothesised that this phenomenon was due to the asymmetrical distribution of mitochondria in the blastomeres during the earlier stages. Oocytes, 2-cell embryos and 4-cell embryos were analysed to determine the volume, ATP content and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number in the whole egg and individual blastomeres. Significant differences were detected in the volumes of cytoplasm and ATP contents between blastomeres from the 2-cell and 4-cell embryos. Moreover, whilst remaining stable in whole embryos, mtDNA copy number differed between blastomeres, indicating that mitochondria in oocytes are unevenly delivered into the daughter blastomeres during the first two cleavages. Although their volume and ATP content were not correlated, there was a significant correlation between volume and mtDNA copy number in 2- and 4-cell blastomeres. These results indicate that the number of mitochondria delivered to blastomeres during early cleavage is not precisely equal, suggesting that the allocation of mitochondria into daughter blastomeres is affected by uneven cytoplasmic distribution during cytokinesis in the oocyte and mother blastomeres.

北海道のオホーツク海域に生息する魚介類における重金属の蓄積量について、重金属の主たる蓄積臓器である肝臓と可食部について分析を行い、オホーツク海における重金属汚染状況を検証した。オホーツク海域の重金属が人体へ与える影響はきわめて低いことが示された。

哺乳動物の卵母細胞を透明帯除去、細胞骨格阻害剤処理後に遠心すると、無核と有核の細胞断片に分離する。この卵母細胞断片を核移植や細胞質移植に使えれば、ドナー核体、レシピエント細胞質体、ドナー細胞質体の調整が容易になる。本研究ではマウス卵母細胞から遠心で細胞断片を調製する方法と得られた卵母細胞断片の細胞学的な特性について検討した。透明帯除去卵母細胞をサイトカラシンD(CD)処理後、個々にパーコール非連続密度勾配を持つキャピラリに詰めて遠心分離した。回収した卵母細胞断片について染色質、ミトコンドリア、脂肪顆粒の分布を観察した。卵母細胞を4~8℃でCD処理した後に1分間遠心すると、57%が1対の小細胞断片(平均直径27.6 um)と大細胞断片(平均直径73.5 um)に分離した。大細胞断片は90%以上が無核で、ミトコンドリアの分布に伴う強く均質な蛍光を示した。卵母細胞の脂肪顆粒は遠心の求心側に移動し、その一部が小細胞断片に取り込まれて分離したと思われる。これらの大細胞断片は核移植のレシピエント細胞質体として利用可能と思われた。
