    To address the multiple and complicated issues of pupil guidance and counseling, this study attempted to construct a new framework for guidance and counseling that has been tackled by teachers and to categorize methods for it. We sorted 12 guidance and counseling methods based on ideal characteristics as a result. Furthermore, by paying attention to teachers’ beliefs on guidance and counseling, we construct a new framework which consists of two axes: practical experiences and academic theories (horizontal), and liberal education and regulation (vertical). 12 methods were rearranged on quadrants in this new framework, and ideal characteristics were rearranged into four categories. Developing self-assessment tools for reflecting on their views on guidance and counseling is necessary to resolve teachers’ confusion about guidance and counseling.

    This study reports a case of school-wide organizational support for a male junior high school student with a history of adverse rearing environments who exhibited recurrent problem behaviors, including verbal and physical violence. The purpose was to examine the support process and its efficacy through an analysis of the student's behavioral and psychological dynamics. Initially, inconsistency in responses among the teaching staff led to organizational confusion. However, support commenced after the school counselor shared a clinical assessment and formulation, enabling the staff to develop a shared understanding of the student's psychological background—specifically transference, low mentalizing capacity, and acting out—and to align their intervention goals. A unified approach to managing the student's emotional arousal was implemented. Individualized academic support further allowed teachers to encounter the student’s internal conflicts and become conscious of their own countertransference, leading to a genuine shift toward more empathic and accepting attitudes. These interventions suggested that the student regained emotional and behavioral regulation, recovered self-esteem, and established peer relationships based on mutual equality. This case indicates that for intervening in the problem behaviors of students with a history of maltreatment, ensuring a stable and holding school environment through organizational information sharing and consistency of response is highly effective.

    Teachers are requested to cope with todayʼs multiple, complicated issues of pupil guidance and counseling. It is important for teachers to reflect on their practice of guidance. From this point of view, we attempted to develop a tool for teachersʼ self-assessment to reflect on their guidance practice. We prepared a propositional self-assessment tool on guidance that consists of 12 representative guidance methods. Using it, we interviewed ten experienced junior and senior high school teachers. By analysis of distribution of choices, open-ended description, and interviewing, we concluded that the tool for participants to reflect on their guidance practice. This propositional self-assessment tool is incomplete. Modifications of questionnaire items and interviews with young teachers are necessary.
