In Japan, visitor centers (VCs) have been established as facilities to promote the attractions of national parks. In the earlier study, 200 national park VCs were categorized into six types and three issues based on location. The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of the use of each national park based on data on the number of users, area, and population staying in each park, to organize the status of VCs in each national park, to examine their roles among existing VCs, and to obtain knowledge that will contribute to the promotion of the use of VCs.The results were obtained from the following three perspectives (1) On average, there are about 6 VCs in each national park. (2) VCs are located in places where the population of visitors is relatively high throughout the year. (3) There were 49 VCs with a distance of more than 30 km from the maximum staying population and less than 500 m from the park boundary. The results of the reclassification of the 49 VCs showed that there were 34 VCs near the core and 15 VCs near the entrances.

The Visitor Center (VC) is a facility that provides information to natural park users. The purpose of this study is to classify the location environment and obtain basic knowledge for VC awareness improvement and functional improvement. The target is 200 VC facilities in national parks. Data collection and generation were carried out, and finally spatial coupling using GIS was carried out. In classification,1) Inside or outside the park;2) Less than 500m or more in the park world; 3) What is the land type, Classified from three viewpoints. The results show that it was classified it into six types. I. Entrance location type in the park:27%; II. Core location type 11%; III. Use base location type 37%; and IV. Edge location type 9% V. Out-of-park entrance type 8%; VI. Non-adjacent 9%. From this result, it was revealed that the VC facility was located in line with the park plan. The entrance type occupies 34% and is near the entrance of the park. The base type is 37% and the second special area locations in the whole are 54%. In this study, the classification of national park VC was arranged, and the present state of the location characteristics was clarified.

With increased consciousness towards health and nature, a growing number of middle-aged and elderly people are taking walks in the Satoyama landscapes using the areas’footpaths. In the Satoyama areas, which are areas that spread over gentle hills, people often get lost at branching points. Therefore it is important to improve people’s map reading skills. This study developed a self-guided walking tour application for navigating the Satoyama footpaths. It combines AR technology and navigation functions for the Tama Hills located in Machida city, Tokyo. We also conducted a questionnaire survey with 32 middle-aged and elderly people in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the application and to compare the results with the effectiveness of conventional paper guide maps. The study was able to confirm the effectiveness of the self-guided tour application based on users’ feelings and experiences using the application.
