Rice-wheat cropping system in Northwest India has been established since green revolution starting in the 1960s, based on modern varieties of crops and sufficient supply of water and nutrients. However, due to decrease in water availability and intensive cropping, soil fertility and soil organic matter contents started to decline. Also, mismanagement (burning) of crop residue induces air pollution, affecting human health. To address the issue of burning straw, other sustainable straw management alternatives are being evaluated from agronomic viewpoint. As for mitigation of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from soil, crop residue can be converted to biochar for various applications. We conducted field and laboratory incubation experiments to investigate the effects of two kinds of biochar (made from rice husk and rice straw) on soil properties and greenhouse gas emissions from wheat fields. After two seasons of field experiments, soil total C were increased only by rice-husk biochar application as compared with no amendment, rice straw biochar and chemical fertilizers. Greenhouse gases (GHGs; CO2, CH4 and N2O) were sampled by chamber method, measured by gas chromatography, then calculated emissions as CO2eq using Global Warming Potentials (GWPs). We found CO2 emission as dominant among three gases in the field experiment, although this included root respiration, and were not significantly changed by biochar application, compared to the control (chemical fertilizer application only). The incubation experiment showed that N2O was dominant among the three gases and increased by biochar application as compared to the control, corresponding to 0.9 and 14% of GHGs increase by rice-husk and rice-straw biochar, respectively, while the latter was equivalent to 0.2% of total C from rice-straw biochar applied.
Although wheat yield was not significantly increased, the co-benefit of reduction in crop residue burning by rice-husk biochar application and contribution to nternational efforts of GHG emission mitigation envisage for sustainable carbon neutrality in an agriculture system. -

Biodegradable plastics applied to soil stimulate the production of greenhouse gases and inhibit plant growth under aerobic conditions. This study aimed to examine the effects of biodegradable plastics on paddy rice growth and greenhouse gas emission under flooding conditions in pot experiments and also on greenhouse gas production under flooding conditions in an incubation experiment. Two series of pot experiments were conducted with rice (Oryza sativa). First series as immediate flooded and 2nd series as 2 weeks nonflooding before flooded, and both kept flooded until harvest. The following four kinds of materials were added to the sandy paddy soil, (1) nonwoven fabric sheets made of polylactic acid and polybutylene-succinate, (2) laminate sheets made of polybutylene adipate terephthalate and pulp, (3) cellulose filter paper, and (4) rice straw. Only soil was used as control. Methane (CH4) emission, measured by chamber method followed by gas chromatography, was significantly larger only in the cellulose treatment than the laminate treatment in the immediate flooded series, indicating that biodegradable plastics had no significant impact on CH4 emission from paddy rice soil. Rice growth and yield did not show significant difference among treatments in both series. Incubation experiment showed the largest CH4 production in cellulose-amended soil, followed by straw-amended and laminate amended soils, and least in fabric-amended soil, while CO2 did not show significant differences among treatments. We need further examination with different biodegradable plastics for a longer period that test used in this study.

The soil quality is measured through the use of indicators that measure or reflect the environmental status or sustainability condition of the ecosystem. Microbial attributes are classified as biological indicators. The use of these indicators in the soil analysis routine are promising. In this research, the effect of two land uses (paddy or upland field) with two different soil management (conventional system or conventional system with previous organic matter applied) on soil microbial properties was evaluated in a farmer’s field. The soil enzymatic activities (urease, glucosidase and arylsulfatase),with exception of acid phosphatase, showed sensitive and consistent responses to the effect of soil management. The results showed higher soil enzymatic activity in paddy than upland field. Total C and N were 1.3–1.8 times increased by organic amendments as well as N mineralization 1.8–2.4 times, while enzyme activities in upland soil 1.5–2.4 times, although 0.7–1.3 times in paddy soil. In both land-uses, the large amount of organic fertilizer applications in previous organic amendments contributed to improve the soil chemical properties and soil microbiological activities.

<p>Studies have shown that humic substances in soil organic matter have various functionalities. In this study, we focused on water-soluble organic components, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM), and applied the method proposed by Tsuda et al. (2016), which has been used to analyze water-extractable humic substances (WEHS) in DOM in lakes, to soil samples for the first time to quantify WEHS in farmlands. The amount of WEHS in agricultural soils in Kanagawa Prefecture was found to be proportional to the amount of water extracted organic matter (WEOM) for the first time in this study. The amount of WEOM was generally higher in the crop layer than in the next surface layer immediately below the crop layer; the same trend was observed for WEHS. The amount of WEHS in WEOM varied greatly among various study sites. However, the percentage of WEHS showed a strong positive correlation between the cultivated and next surface layers. These results indicate that the total amount of soil organic matter influences the amount of WEOM and the amount of WEHS in WEOM. Moreover, the nitrogen in WEOM was found to be mainly present in non-WEHS and almost WEHS. The high positive correlation between the amounts of carbon and nitrogen in WEHS shows that the nitrogen compounds present in WEHS are chemical structures that are constrained to some extent.</p>
