Outdoor activities, including therapeutic horticulture, have become important recreations for older adults, physical rehabilitation patients, and individuals with developmental disabilities. Many horticultural activities have been provided dor these groups of people and the the results of these activities have been reported. Therapeutic horticulture involving the use of plant material provides psychological and physical benefits, and it has been one aspect of physical, physiological, and psychological restoration on health care setting. For persons with develomental disabilities, outdoor activities have an important role in sensory stumulation, stress relief, and consciousness of both self and surroundings. Therefore, horticulture, gardening, agriculture, and forest recreation are sometimes regarded as outdoor treatment activities for individuals with developmental disabilities. The physical nature of agricultural, horticultural, and landscaping jobs has the benefit of reducing bahevior problems. Horticultural therapy also has been cited as a method for increasing ability to stay on work tasks, developing acceptable work habits, and increasing the ability to follow direction. Natural environments are not the only lind of restorative environments, but they seem to have substantial advantages over many other settings. From accounts of gardening experiences to hiking in the wilderness, several personal stories testify to the magical healing power of being in the nature, and, in paticular, forest settngs have the ability to provide suitable environmantal conditions for the treatment of in dividuals with developmental disabilities. Forest-based activities can provide total treatment including physical rehabilitation, emotional restoration, stress relief, therapeutic recreation, and communication stimulation, among others. This research descibes case studies of oersons with devalopmental dosabilities and their involvement with multiple horticultural and forest activities at Shin'ai no sato Matsukawa, a treatment facility for persons with developmental and physical disabilities in Matsukawa Town, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

Forest amenities have various important meanings in our modern lives. Forests and woods supply the recreational space and other amenities for people's needs for nature. Forest recreation is important not only for healthy people, but also for persons with mental or physical disabilities. This paper reconsiders some forest recreations in the treatment of mental disabilities at an institution for persons with mental disabilities in Nagano prefecture,Japan. After a half and a year experiencing forest recreations of forest work and walks, the changes in bahevior, remedies, and abnormal behaviors of the clients of the institution were observed and evaluated. These results suggest that forest recreation affects treatment of mental disabilities.

Forest amenity is not only important for general forest recreational activities but also treatment, rehabilitation, and therapy for people with mental or physical disabilities. It is not, however, easy to find suitable forest sites for the treatment activities. Autism is known as one of the disabilities of the brain. The main symptoms are discommmunication with others, cogtive impairments, and abnormal behaviors. The reason for it's occurence has not been made clearyet and a radical cure for it has not been discovered, either. First of all, the treatment and rehabilitation of mental and cognitive disability like autism is generally geared towards training the body. However, many autistic persons have often been restricted in their experiences in ordinary life, society, and even in outdoor experiences, Because of their abnormal behaviors. Therefore, having experiences in outdoors to train and stimulate body functions has an important meaning as one of the treatment ways. This paper aims to show the changes of clients in a treatment insitution through their involvement in forest activities which consisted of work and recreation in the regional forest in Nagano Prefecture,Japan. Because of their involvement in forest activities over a three year period, according to the improvement of working abilities, the communication abilities of most of these clients have improved.Autistic conditions have also eased and their general behaviors and basic life abilities have come to be normalized. These empirical results suggest the forest activities have the possibility of effective autism treatment and also present the possibility of the useful utilizing of the rural forest.
