Structured Group Encounter (SGE) is a useful, preventive, and developnetal counseling group activity. SGE is used for people to understand each other and develop relationships at work places, schools, social welfare institutions, and so forth. It is generally used indoors but also has potential as an outdoor activity. Individuals with developmental disavilities, especially mental retardation sometimes have comunicative disabilities and easily acquire mental and emotional frustration. SGE does not always demand verbal communication, so it can be suitable activity and a communication work for persons under mental disability treatment. It has been shown that outdoor treatment activities can reduce inner frustration of the clients with developmental disabilities and ease their panic reaction or behavior problems. Active SGE can also have positive effects for their physical exercise and recreational activities, because they are sometimes restiricted by their behavior disabilities. Therefore, SGE on outdoor treatment activities might have effects and possibilities as a treatment for developmental disabilities. This report shows a case study at an institution for people with developmental disabilities and considers the effects of SGE on outdoor treatment activities by utilizing community forests. Through attmenpting one and a half year of SGE treatment activities at commmunity forests, three participants showed changes in their ability to communicate with clients and staff, make the relationships, decrease behavior problems, improve daily life abilities. These results suggest SGE on outdoor treatment activities have certain effects and possibilities of utilizing community forsts for treatment activities of developmental disabilities.
