Semi-terrestrial brachyuran sesarmid crabs are the most diverse and important faunal components of mangrove forest and temperate coastal communities worldwide. To establish a stable larval rearing method for understanding their larval developmental processes including molecular mechanisms of molting and metamorphosis, we examined the effects of diet on the survival and growth of three sesarmid crabs, Chiromantes haematocheir, Orisarma intermedium, and O. dehaani under larval development. Zoea of each species, immediately after hatching, were reared under different feeding conditions as follows: non-feeding; fed only nutrition-enriched rotifers; fed only Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii; and fed a combination of both nutrition-enriched rotifers and brine shrimp. Larvae of each species survived almost to megalopa when they were fed both rotifer and brine shrimp, but all C. haematocheir larvae had died by zoeal stage 2 when they were only fed brine shrimp. Chiromantes haematocheir larvae could survive into the megalopa stage when fed only nutrition-enriched rotifer, whereas both O. dehaani and O. intermedium showed 50% or less survival and metamorphosis rates into megalopa. The duration of larval development and survival rates of the three crabs were shorter and higher, respectively, in the mixed feeding group (both rotifer and brine shrimp) than when only fed rotifer or brine shrimp. This study provides baseline knowledge of the interspecific variability in larval survival and duration under different diets for sympatric sesarmid crab species.

The larval sinking phenomenon is a cause of larval mass mortality during seed production of the horsehair crab Erimacrus isenbeckii. As a basis for developing larval rearing techniques to prevent this phenomenon, we examined the larval phototaxis, vertical distribution, body density and external morphology such as carapace spines, which may provide drag force while larvae are sinking in seawater. Larvae showed positive phototaxis in the first zoeal stage, and showed strengthened negative phototaxis after the second zoeal stage. Higher incidences of negative phototactic behavior were recorded at longer wavelengths of more than 620 nm in all larval stages. Newly hatched larvae floated in the vertical test chamber, but they tended to sink in the chamber one day after hatching. Larval body density was greater than the specific gravity of the seawater. The length of carapace spines tended to decrease with larval growth. The horsehair crab larvae thus showed a behavioral habit that makes them sink in seawater under the light condition. Further studies should examine methods for rearing horsehair crab larvae under dark conditions or under light of longer wavelengths from the bottom of the vertical chamber.

Tetraodontid juveniles (n = 54) were collected from Shibetsu Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, on August 30, 2022. Since morphological identification to species was difficult, DNA barcoding was performed. The nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial 16S rDNA (16S), cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), cytochrome b (Cyt b), and the control region (CR) of these juveniles were determined. Database homology search and phylogenetic analysis using COI, Cyt b and CR sequences unambiguously determined these juveniles as the purple puffer Takifugu porphyreus, whereas those using 16S sequence could not diagnostically identify these juveniles. In recent years, the catch of T. porphyreus in Hokkaido has increased rapidly, but information on the juveniles from this area is scarce. Future research is needed to explore the possibility that earlier life stages of T. porphyreus may exist in the vicinity of Shibetsu Bay.

Larval Pacific herring Clupea pallasii has been considered a potential prey item of juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta because they share habitat in the coastal area of northern Japan, in spring. We experimented on predation of larval herring by juvenile salmon in captivity. The juvenile salmon fed 4.7-7.4% body weight of live and the frozen-thawed larval herrings. The larvae were digested quickly in the stomach and 50% of them were evacuated from the stomach in 2-4 hours. They were morphologically identifiable up to 3-6 hours after being fed. Quick digestion and short duration time of fish in the stomach need to be considered in field surveys of salmon feeding habit. Predation mortality by juvenile salmon may have considerable impact on larval survival of herring.
