Developing Social Capital on Social Media among Female Farmers: Social Support Acquisition from a Closed Network Reviewed

<p>In this study, we investigate the formation of social capital in a female farmers' network. Specifically, we investigate (1) which network property contributes to the ease of the social capital formation, and (2) what kind of social support can be obtained from the network. To answer these questions, we conducted a web questionnaire survey focusing on a female farmers' network on social media. Our results show the following: (1) Social capital is easily formed in a network that limits the occupations and genders of its participants; (2) Information, evaluation, and emotional support can be gained from the network consisting only of female farmers. These results would help us decide how to promote female farmers' empowerment.</p>

How Do the Farmers Use SNS? : A case study of Farmers Engaged in Agricultural Diversification in Saitama Prefecture

<p>The participants of agricultural diversification need to obtain various kinds of information since they need to acquire a wide variety of knowledge for successful agricultural diversification. Before the ICT innovation, they used to obtain such information through the network based on their kin-ties and local community. However, in this era of ICT technologies, they now develop and maintain their networks through social networking services (SNS). They exchange necessary information in agricultural diversification using this new type of network. This paper presents our investigation of networks on SNS. Specifically, we conducted a study to reveal (1) which SNS the participants use to develop and maintain their networks and (2) what type of support the participants obtain from their networks. Our results show that the participants (1) use different SNS for different purposes and (2) obtain informational, esteem, and emotional supports from their network on SNS.</p>

<p>The number of SNS users has been increasing. This has enabled people to interact beyond their regional network. We consider that SNS significantly affects the agricultural women involved in the sixth industrialization activities. For those who have traditionally developed the sixth industrialization activity based on local communities, the decrease in rural populations makes it difficult for them to cooperate. This paper investigates the areas of the sixth industrialization in which agricultural women can cooperate, and how SNS affects agricultural women. We found that the use of SNS improves public relations and sales in the sixth industrialization processes. We also conclude that agricultural women get emotional support through SNS communication.</p>
